Released in December 2009, the Nike Kobe 5 was designed by Eric Avar. This sleek, unusual shoe included a glass and carbon fiber plate for better control. Afficher plus
The Nike Kobe 5 was a close collaboration between the brand's design team and the athlete. Bryant always had a strong sense of what he needed in a shoe, and he identified a lot with the sharp lateral movements of pro-level soccer players. He wanted a similarly low, light shoe to support his own sudden moves on the basketball court. At the time of its release, the Kobe 5 was the lowest-topped, lightest basketball shoe Nike had ever brought to market. The 5 used Flywire technology to simulate the movements of the body's own tendons. The idea was to work with the foot, not against it. The upper was heat-welded in a process that improved consistency and added less weight compared to sewing. Aesthetic details like heart and dot-matrix symbols were chosen for the personal meaning they held for Bryant. The popular White/Cyber-Purple-Red colorway from the original release was revisited in 2019. The Kobe 5 Protro Gamer 2K in a Black/Cyber-Dark Grey colorway has also proven popular with sneaker fans.
