Streetwear has always come from a place of truth and authenticity. Without that, it’s merely clothing with a logo. The style has brought to the forefront many stories of designers telling you about their cultural backgrounds and upbringings just through thread and needle. But with the rise of social media, it makes it harder to find just the right authentic voices within the scene. Shows like The Hype make sure to find just those budding creatives that are bringing their stories and unique designs to the streetwear scene. HBO Max’s The Hype follows a group of 12 young designers from across the country as they compete to create the next big thing in streetwear. Some of the top names within fashion, such as multi-platinum recording artist Offset, stylist and creative director for IVY PARK, Marni Senofonte, and UNION LA co-owner and streetwear designer, Bephie Birkett are three of the judges set to crown the next big designer in the game.

But out of the 12, Winston Bartholomew “Barth” Holder III reigned supreme, winning many challenges on the show all while sporting his signature Bee logo. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Barth brought his eye for coordination and themes to the HBO Max stage, while also showcasing his own self-titled brand, Barth. Since 2012, Barth has been crafting one-of-a-kind streetwear pieces for both men and women, and after his latest The Hype win, there seems to be no sign of that slowing down. We chatted with the New York City native Season 2 winner in an exclusive That’s 5 interview after his momentous win.

What influences you?

The world, and my experiences within it. I love traveling and seeing new places, meeting people. All of this amalgamates into the designs.

What’s an overrated style trend that you see currently?

Buying into brands that dont give a fuck about you. People’s taste palates are finally maturing to the point where they no longer want to wear pieces that go against or misrepresent their morals or ethics. Giving light to those who do. Of course, there are still label fiends out there but the tides are finally turning, ushering a wave of new designers who stand for more than aristocracy or clout chasing.

What’s an underrated trend that you wish to see more of?

Natural hair and bodies. How the hell am I supposed to keep up with these doctor-created curves hahaha. They look amazing, but the proportions don’t work for commercial brands unless you are rich like Rainbow Shops and corner the market with $10 spandex outfits you rebrand as FashioNova.

What are you most excited about, right now?

The next level. Looking at where we are and where we have been…What’s next? Is it metaverse? Is it interplanetary travel fashion?  Or utilitarian because of global warming or some other catalyst like in Dune? Or will it be more whimsical and grandiose like Gareth Pugh or Phillip Treacy?

What’s next for you?

Traveling. I’d like to spend a month in the EU, then one in the Caribbean, then maybe hit Asia.  All while designing and creating my 2023 collection.
