KAWS in Detroit Here in Detroit, it’s hard to miss KAWS imprint on the downtown area. Back in May, KAWS unveiled a new sculpture, titled “Waiting” here at One Campus Martius in downtown Detroit. The 17 foot bronze sculpture was the first placement of this new design, and captures “a parent and child in a moment of pause”. That same week, we launched KAWS figures and apparel on StockX, creating the first ever marketplace with transparent real-time pricing for KAWS limited edition art collectibles.

Beginnings Though his relevance and public awareness of his art has risen significantly in recent years, KAWS has been perfecting his craft for over two decades, getting his start as a graffiti artist in Jersey City and New York City in the early 1990s. Check out this video of KAWS tearing up the streets of NYC and Tokyo, utilizing his now famous designs on advertising throughout the cities. https://www.youtube.com/embed/PKr7O4J61LA While it wasn’t until 1999 that he released his first vinyl companion with Japanese streetwear brand Bounty Hunter, the original companion figure paved the way for a future relationship with Japanese toy manufacturer Medicom Toy. One of the first figures the duo ever released was simply titled “Bus Stop” and released in 2002. These mini figures embodied KAWS early years as a downtown graffiti artist, paying homage to his roots as a kid hustling around the streets re-making advertisements in his own way. Original Fake With rising commercial success while gaining traction within modern art communities KAWS launched his own brand, Original Fake, in 2006. The brand was a partnership between KAWS, Medicom Toy, and Nexus VII and released hundreds of items over the years. The releases were wide ranging and included everything from graphic t-shirts to custom cut & sew garments, and vinyl figures to home goods. While KAWS closed the brand in 2013, it was clear that he poured his creative energy into everything he produced. To this day, art collectors and streetwear enthusiasts alike look to Original Fake as a brand that trail-blazed in both the design aesthetics of streetwear and the growing trend of artists releasing limited run art objects. Here’s a selection of some of our favorite items the brand released in its 7 year history.

 

 

We’re in the Halloween spirit here at StockX, so we’re bringing you one of KAWS’ first Halloween themed items – a set of 3 Original Fake Companion Skeleton Ornaments from the Fall/Winter 2007 collection. Each ornament includes intricate details, hinged appendages, and KAWS’ classic X motif on the hands, feet, and skulls. A New Era Following the closure of Original Fake, KAWS has continued to release collectibles and apparel through a variety of galleries and dealers. Most notably, he released six “Open Edition” Companions in November 2016, which notoriously crashed the MoMA Design Store website as collectors flooded to scoop up the figures. Since then, KAWS has dropped a handful of new figures through his own website, KAWSONE, and has also collaborated with Japanese apparel retailer UNIQLO for multiple lines of apparel and accessories.
