Underrated Designer Bags of 2019

This year brought us many iconic bags. There was the Louis Vuitton Multi-Pochette Accessoires, Fendi’s baguette bag, Dior’s saddle bag revival, Off-White’s Jitney and of course Bottega’s beautiful buttery Pouch that every influencer seemed to have procured out of thin air. But while 2019 has been a boon for bags we’ve seen all over the place, there were also designs and styles that didn’t exactly get the love they really deserved. Here’s a rundown of bags that were released this year which you might have missed.

The Louis Vuitton Solar Ray Monogram Sac Plat

A Louis Vuitton heritage style, the Sac Plat has been around since 1968, designed specifically for travel. Its elongated shape means it can easily fit into luggage, and be ready for use when you arrive at your destination. Though LV has kept this design in rotation, Virgil Abloh reached into the French fashion brand’s vault to refresh the Sac Plat this year, giving it sleek black and orange hardware that plays off the classic Louis Vuitton Monogram canvas.

The Valentino VRing Shopping Tote

Valentino has eased off the Rockstuds and replaced them with the V Ring moniker – leather tassel charm, soft leather, double top handles, internal zipper pouch.

The Chloe Annie Shoulder Bag

From Chloe’s Pre-Fall 2019 collection, the Annie bag is the kind of bag that will not go out of style. Its structured shape, double chain strap and turn lock closure speaks to a bygone era of bag design while remaining firmly on-trend for the present.

The Burberry Monogram Bum Bag

With a redesigned logo, Burberry released its Monogram Capsule Collection this year, and this brown and beige logo print bum bag was part of it.  With its pop of color and black and brown accents, Burberry’s version offers a nice, under appreciated reprieve from what we’ve seen in the last few years when it comes to the fanny pack trend.

The Gucci Zumi Card Case

Gucci’s Zumi collection is named in honor of Zumi Rosow, an actor, musician and now Gucci muse. While Rosow carried the main bag named after her in Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2019 show in Paris, this leather wallet combines the best elements of the collection in a small package.

The Prada Margit Shoulder Bag

Very much an underdog bag of 2019, Prada’s “Margit” bag is a minimalist’s dream – from its smooth and versatile tan leather, to its distinct silver hardware.

Louis Vuitton NéoNoé Giant Jungle Monogram

Louis Vuitton Monogram Giant collection was released this spring, super sizing the Louis Vuitton Monogram motif, but the summer gave us the Monogram Giant Jungle capsule collection, which combined Nicolas Ghesquière’s Cruise 2018 show in Kyoto with the Monogram Giant Monogram. This NéoNoé was one of the lesser featured pieces, but the reimagining of this quintessential LV bag once used to exclusively carry champagne, deserves a second look.

The Fendi Roma Amor Macro Baguette

Fendi’s baguette made a comeback in the last year – blessing us with another opportunity to abuse the phrase “let’s get this bread,” but the Roma Amor’s neon outlined micro baguette made us want to say it again, and really mean it this time. This overlooked tiny bag with a lot of pizzazz from 2019 is definitely for someone who doesn’t mind standing out.

Chloe Aby Day Bag

From Chloé’s Pre-Fall 2019 collection, this Aby Day Bag is a new take on the iconic Paddington Bag which was a big hit in 2004. It’s subtle, classic was overshadowed in a year with lots of loud bags and highly anticipated releases, but this everyday bag with just the right balance of hardware is one that will make an impact beyond trends.

Gucci Sylvie 1969 Top Handle Plexiglas

Gucci’s signature Sylvie got a makeover in the form of Plexiglas. Complimented by gold-tone hardware, this highly structured iteration lives at the perfect nostalgia-meets-the-future intersection.
