Supreme’s Fall/Winter 2022 season is off to a great start. After delivering the very popular André 3000 T-shirt as a part of Week 1 and back to back Nike drops for Weeks 2 and 3, Supreme is back for Week 4 with another big collaborative partner. This week, Supreme has reunited with the legendary Japanese designer, Yohji Yamamoto, for the pair’s sophomore collaboration. The collection features more than 25 new apparel pieces, two pairs of Dr. Martens shoes, and several accessories.

Japanese culture has been a part of the Supreme story for many years now. Their first store in Japan opened in 1998 and they have since opened several more locations throughout the country. Since then, the New York streetwear brand has collaborated with a fair share of Japan’s most prominent designers, ranging from Comme des Garçons and WTAPS, to Junya Watanabe and NEIGHBORHOOD.  This collection marks the second time in the last two years that Supreme and Yamamoto have worked together, which hopefully means a long-term partnership can be anticipated.

For those unfamiliar with the work of Yohji Yamamoto, he is a legendary Japanese fashion designer who has been designing clothes since 1972, making this year his 50th anniversary in the industry. Considered a master tailor, Yamamoto is well-known for his avant-garde aesthetic. His designs primarily feature dark colors and loose silhouettes that lack any unnecessary adornment or frills. For the most part, Yohji Yamamoto’s designs are delivered in a black color, about which he’s been quoted saying it’s “modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy – but mysterious. But above all black says this: ‘I don’t bother you – don’t bother me’.”

This collection takes inspiration from Tekken, a Japanese media and gaming franchise created by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The artwork from the collection features imagery of characters taken directly from the video game series. Pieces like the Supreme x Yohji Yamamoto Tekken Nylon Jacket feature characters like Devil Kazuya and Angel on them. Other piece, like the sweaters, also feature characters from the gaming franchise, displaying King I and Kunimitsu in a knit graphic. This is not the first time Supreme has worked with gaming culture either. Last year, the brand delivered a Mortal Kombat Arcade Machine with partner, Arcade1UP.

The full collection featured a wide range of apparel, including sweaters, hoodies, and jackets. The hoodies from the collection deliver a retro styling of both brand’s collaborative graphic design laid over a Tekken logo on the piece’s chest. Additionally, the pairing delivered two colors of a collaborative Dr. Martens 1461 3 Eye Shoe. The shoes feature an all over finger-paint print spelling out Supreme in different colors as well as both brand’s logos on the back of them.
