You can probably remember watching Tyler The Creator\u2019s \u201cYonkers\u201d video for the first time. You can probably remember thinking that it was either \u201ctotally sick\u201d or \u201ccompletely disturbed\u201d (no in-betweens, no questions). If you were paying attention (not even that hard either), you likely noticed a few common themes in their online presence. These themes ranged from skateboarding to outright vulgarity but almost always included the presence of a certain clothing brand, Supreme.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"StockX Image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/24.media.tumblr.com\/53f45bbb5df8ef1b80f497801894041f\/tumblr_n0wxa4qmxx1qifr9no1_500.gif\" alt=\"Image result for odd future supreme\" width=\"500\" height=\"277\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tyler, The Creator in Earl Sweatshirt&#8217;s &#8220;Sasquatch&#8221; Music Video wearing a Supreme Box Logo Crewneck<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Something really interesting was happening at the time when Odd Future became the internet\u2019s most popular troublemakers. The internet and its presence in our lives grew, social media and social sharing shot through the stratosphere. Internet-based sharing platforms created windows that anyone, anywhere could look through and be in another place, living vicariously through someone else. <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/levels\/found-family-how-odd-future-changed-everything\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pitchfork\u2019s 2018 article, \u201cFound Family: How Odd Future Changed Everything\u201d<\/a> details how the group exploited their newfound power that existed in sharing platforms like Twitter, Youtube, Vine (RIP), and eventually Instagram. Acting as something like the first internet influencers, Odd Future put the brand Supreme on a stage it had never seen before, or as Pitchfork puts it \u201cStreetwear brands, namely Supreme, were revitalized with their co-signs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"StockX Image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/49.media.tumblr.com\/295192627ff1a4dd5f4c16a195c122c8\/tumblr_nrysxtQiLt1tvvcn1o2_500.gif\" alt=\"Related image\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Earl Sweatshirt on Pitchfork&#8217;s &#8220;Over\/Under&#8221; wearing a Supreme Camp Cap<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether or not Supreme\u2019s massive growth since 2010 is to be credited 100% to Odd Future, it\u2019s undeniable they\u2019ve had an impact on the brand\u2019s trajectory in some way. Recently, Jaden Smith spoke with GQ, specifically stating that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/jaden-smith-g-star-style-profile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cnever cared about Supreme until Tyler, The Creator\u201d<\/a>. Similarly, Dazed is quoted stating \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/36700\/1\/tyler-the-creator-has-been-doing-it-better-since-2011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler was patient zero in bringing the cult brand a devout following.<\/a>\u201d In the same vein, the Odd Future gang themselves have come to acknowledge the roll they\u2019ve played, stating several times in several songs (AM \/\/ Radio, What The Fuck Right Now (Remix)) that they&#8217;re the reason people are wearing the brand. Only three years older than the brand, Tyler and the Odd Future Crew were the perfect example of what it looked like to grow up watching and participating in the cultural ethos Supreme tries to exude. Larry Clark was quoted as calling Supreme like \u201cKids\u201d in real life and Jebbia defined it as a type of clubhouse in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/22\/fashion\/guerrilla-fashion-the-story-of-supreme.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">feature with the New York Times<\/a>. This was in the 90\u2019s in NY without the internet. Fifteen to twenty years later, in LA, the same thing took place for the Odd Future guys, but with the internet at their disposal. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"pFQiGc\">&#8220;New Preme shit got me feeling flyer than a bag of bees&#8221; &#8211; Tyler, The Creator on Slater<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supreme and Odd Future\u2019s intersection happened in a way that can only be described as organic. Before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/style\/fairfax-avenue-mecca-of-streetwear-part-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fairfax was the \u201cStreetwear Mecca\u201d<\/a> it is today, it was just a quiet neighborhood and as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/tyler-the-creator-glenn-obrien-supreme-clothes-gq-style-bible-april-2012-photos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler states in an interview with GQ<\/a>, Supreme was the only store in the area that sold skateboards at the time. As the Odd Future crew frequented the store, a relationship between them and Supreme developed naturally. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angsty and edgy, Odd Future was seemingly the living embodiment of Supreme in the late 2000\u2019s and early 2010\u2019s. Supreme took the collective under their wing and the relationship developed quickly, leading to Supreme eventually giving them free clothes. In 2011, Tyler would model in a lookbook for Supreme, <a href=\"https:\/\/hypebeast.com\/2011\/3\/ollie-magazine-supreme-2011-springsummer-editorial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shot by Ollie Magazine<\/a>. As the group gained popularity, they\u2019d soon become something like walking billboards for the brand, putting them on display on some of the highest stages imaginable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supreme In The Yonkers Video and at the MTV Awards<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"StockX Embedded Content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XSbZidsgMfw\" width=\"1100\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until 2011, Odd Future was still relatively underground. Instagram was one year old and social sharing platforms were still finding their legs. On February 10th, 2011 though, things changed for the west coast rap collective when Tyler, The Creator dropped the music video to his breakout single, Yonkers. The video went viral, gaining him the attention of Hip Hop\u2019s highest, with both Kanye West and Pusha-T cosigning Tyler less than two weeks after the music video dropped. The video received praise outside of just Hip Hop as well, gaining him a spot on Time Magazine\u2019s Top Ten Everything of 2011 list and was named \u201cBest New Track\u201d by Pitchfork. Soon after all of this, he would be invited to the 2011 VMA\u2019s where he\u2019d win best new artist, beating out Foster The People, Kreayshawn, Big Sean and Chris Brown, and Wiz Khalifa. Tyler\u2019s accomplishments in 2011 were achieved while wearing his favorite brand. In the Yonkers video, he can be seen wearing a Supreme Camp Cap and subsequently, he can be seen wearing one during his attendance of the VMA Ceremony as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supreme Box Logo on Jimmy Fallon<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"StockX Embedded Content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OHc3rsAZG9Y\" width=\"1100\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If 2011 was the year that Odd Future really blew up, 2012 was the year they showed they were here to stay, at least for a little while. After the VMA, Odd Future had the eyes on them that they needed to take things to the next level. Tyler\u2019s \u201cGoblin\u201d was blowing up and achieved a number one spot on the Billboard 100 in 2011 and 2012 came with a slew of guest performances, including one on The Jimmy Fallon Show with Odd Future cohort, Hodgy Beats. The two performed \u201cSandwitches\u201d off Goblin, Tyler wearing a white and red Supreme Box Logo hoodie, marking yet another instance where he\u2019d put the brand in front of millions of eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supreme On SNL<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"StockX Embedded Content\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/49559206\" width=\"1100\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another piece of the puzzle that was Odd Future\u2019s huge 2012 was Frank Ocean\u2019s release of his debut album, Channel Orange. Not only did the album hit number one but it would go on to win him a Grammy in 2013. Prior to his Grammy win and appearance came a feature on Saturday Night Live as the musical guest. Frank opted to perform two of the album\u2019s hits, \u201cThinkin\u2019 Bout You\u201d and \u201cPyramids\u201d. Both were met with rave reviews as people would go on to wonder where <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Frank was during his performance at the Grammys. His choice of costume for his SNL performances came from Supreme\u2019s archives as Frank wore a Supreme Thunderbird Hockey Jersey released in the late 2000\u2019s, further expanding the brand\u2019s reach. Frank\u2019s performance at the 2013 Grammys was widely considered to be representative of his entire night at the ceremony. Nominated for six awards, he took home two (just one for Channel Orange, another for his feature on \u201cNo Church In The Wild\u201d), and the performance itself was lackluster.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>&#8220;A real ninja with the blade and the mask,<br \/>\nGot them gold ninja stars and red Supreme nunchuks&#8221; &#8211; Frank Ocean on She<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"StockX Image\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55431\" src=\"https:\/\/stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/gq-frank-ocean-timeline-gq-2012.jpg\" alt=\"StockX_Image\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images-wp.stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/gq-frank-ocean-timeline-gq-2012.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/images-wp.stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/gq-frank-ocean-timeline-gq-2012-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/images-wp.stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/gq-frank-ocean-timeline-gq-2012-768x581.jpg 768w, https:\/\/images-wp.stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/gq-frank-ocean-timeline-gq-2012-1100x833.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/images-wp.stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/gq-frank-ocean-timeline-gq-2012-832x630.jpg 832w, https:\/\/images-wp.stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/gq-frank-ocean-timeline-gq-2012-1057x800.jpg 1057w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In their 2015 piece, Complex details some of what happened as Odd Future fell from the seat of authority they held in 2012 and 2013. As the key members split off and started doing their own things, their personalities and the way they promoted themselves did the same. What was once colorful and lighthearted in Earl Sweatshirt, became dark and a little more minimalist. Where Supreme was once Tyler\u2019s go to, the brand eventually gave way to his own brand Golf, which he almost exclusively wore for years. Frank on the other hand, went into hiding in totality, not really emerging into the public eye between the years 2013 and 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>&#8220;Supreme garment and weed gardeners garnishing spliffs&#8221; &#8211; Earl Sweatshirt on Chum<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group may no longer be the activists they used to be for Supreme, but their 3-5 year season of evangelism can be heavily attributed to Supreme\u2019s popularity since then. Looking back, Odd Future\u2019s rise alongside of Supreme was a perfect partnership. For Supreme, it provided them a platform to attain the global domination they currently assert.
