{"id":993,"date":"2014-02-14T06:49:20","date_gmt":"2014-02-14T06:49:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sneakerheaddata.wordpress.com\/?p=993"},"modified":"2016-04-28T17:19:56","modified_gmt":"2016-04-28T21:19:56","slug":"which-all-star-pack-sneaker-has-been-most-profitable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stockx.com\/news\/which-all-star-pack-sneaker-has-been-most-profitable\/","title":{"rendered":"Which All-Star Pack Sneaker Has Been Most Profitable?"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>This is the first Campless post co-written by one of our fans.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NicoAtienza\" target=\"_blank\">Nico Atienza<\/a> worked closely with us on all aspects of this article, including performing significant data analysis.\u00a0 Perhaps you'll see more of Nico's work in the future.\u00a0 (Or perhaps we'll let the number of retweets determine his fate).<\/pre>\n<p>You know what&#8217;s nice about having lots of data?\u00a0 You can choose the most relevant for any given time or event.\u00a0 And there is no event more relevant to the time called now than the 2014 NBA All Star Weekend in New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>That means, of course, a data retrospective on the Nike Basketball packs of the last two ASGs.\u00a0 In 2012, the hype machine was on a trillion (actual recorded data point) with the release of the now infamous Galaxy Pack.\u00a0 Last year we saw the multi-named Extraterrestrial \/ Area 72 Pack.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re reading this, I&#8217;ll bet you have at least one pair from one of these packs. We&#8217;ll be looking at four from each:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Galaxy:<\/strong>\u00a0 LeBron IX, Kobe VII, KD IV, Foamposite One<\/li>\n<li><strong>Area 72:<\/strong>\u00a0 LeBron X, KD V, Kobe 8+, Barkley Posite Max<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Other blogs are certainly doing the same thing, in various form.\u00a0 Our favorite so far has been the <a href=\"http:\/\/sneakernews.com\/2013\/02\/11\/nike-all-star-battle-area-72-vs-galaxy\/\" target=\"_blank\">SneakerNews piece<\/a> which used a poll to let readers vote on which ASG sneakers they like the best &#8211; and thus created some data of their own.<\/p>\n<p>For us, there are myriad ways we can dive into the data.\u00a0 Resell price was too easy, but the concept of value is important so we decided to analyze &#8220;Resell Price Premium&#8221;, which is calculated as [Resell Price minus Retail Price, divided by Retail Price].\u00a0 This could also be called margin, or markup.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images-wp.stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/all-star-packs.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"StockX Image\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-994\" src=\"https:\/\/images-wp.stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/all-star-packs.jpg\" alt=\"All Star Packs\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images-wp.stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/all-star-packs.jpg 3000w, https:\/\/images-wp.stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/all-star-packs-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/images-wp.stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/all-star-packs-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/images-wp.stockx.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/all-star-packs-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3000px) 100vw, 3000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Methodology:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Data set is eBay sold auctions for mens sneakers in new condition (deadstock) only<\/li>\n<li>Timeframe is May 1, 2012 through January 1, 2014. Note, this creates a limitation because the Galaxy Pack was released in February 2012, but our data does not begin until May.<\/li>\n<li>Resell premium percentage is represented by the blue line on the above chart.\u00a0 The Y-axis (vertical) scale represents this percentage, which range from 0% to 400%.\u00a0 The X-axis (horizontal) plots each of the 8 sneakers analyzed in ascending order of its resell premium<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Insights &amp; Stats:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Key Insight:<\/strong>\u00a0 Although the Galaxy Foam has the highest average resale price (which we all knew), it is actually <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> the most profitable &#8211; it does <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> have the highest resell price premium.\u00a0 That honor belongs to the KD IV which, priced at only $95 retail, has a <strong>376%<\/strong> premium<\/li>\n<li>The Kobe 8+ had the highest resale premium for the Area 72 pack at <b>54%<\/b><\/li>\n<li>We all know the Galaxy Pack was more limited than the Area 72 pack, but did you know how much more limited?\u00a0 With 9 months <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fewer<\/span> sales, the Area 72 pack sold approximately 4 times as many pairs.\u00a0 Does this ratio hold for retail volume?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know; we&#8217;d need to ask <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattSOS\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Powell<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Knowing that limited supply often drives high resell price premium, this fits logically when we see the premium of the Area 72 pack ranging from <b>39% &#8211; 54%<\/b>, while the Galaxy pack was <b>92% &#8211; 376%<\/b><\/li>\n<li>The most expensive single sale was, not surprisingly, courtesy of the Galaxy Foam.
