This Rolex GMT-Master II, ref. 16710 with the red and black aluminum "Coke" bezel insert is the last reference that feels vintage(y), and it's the one you should buy if you want to enjoy the charm and functionality of the original 1955 version (designed to give PanAm pilots a way to simultaneously track two timezones - one against the 24-hour Greenwich Mean Time via an arrow tipped hand) while at the same time taking advantage of Rolex's more recent technical advancements. Like all GMTs, this 16710 employs an in-house chronometer certified automatic caliber but its overall proportions lean more to the past than the present - the white gold Mercedes hands of the 16710 are slimmer than those in today's catalog; like current models the lume surrounds are white gold but the lume plots are smaller; the 24-hour bezel is ever-present, albeit not as wide and the numerals more demure by comparison; the screw-down crown is Twinlock, the lugs less beefy, the steel less heavy. This reference is the last old style Master II and the last time Rolex stepped out with multi-colored bezels - from it's discontinuation in 2007 to 2013 Master IIs were only available with black bezels. Quintessentially cool the 16710 harkens back to the golden age of transatlantic flight in the 1950s and the Concorde jet set of the 1980s - it's as envy worthy today as it is in vintage Rolex ads showing mysterious men in suits and beautiful women.
