Prior to every Supreme season, rumours abound concerning any potential collaborations that may take shape. This year, the biggest rumour of the Supreme offseason was that the New York streetwear brand would be releasing a collaborative apparel collection with British Luxury brand, Burberry. Over this last weekend, those rumours were confirmed as celebrities like A$AP Nast and Sage Elesser were spotted wearing pieces from the collection. While the entire collaboration deserves applause, the Supreme Burberry Box Logo, a piece once bootlegged but now officially validated, has emerged as the collection’s shining star.
There are those who would say that Supreme x Burberry has been a long time coming. In 2002, Supreme released a bootlegged Box Logo T-shirt that featured Louis Vuitton’s iconic LV Monogram, which was quickly followed up with a cease and desist from the luxury brand. Despite their previous qualms, the pair collaborated 15 years later, releasing an official Supreme x Louis Vuitton version of the Box Logo T-shirt alongside a full apparel collection that even got some shine at Paris Fashion Week. In the case of Burberry, Supreme is officially collaborating with a luxury fashion brand whose copyrights or trademarks they’ve ripped off for the second time. In 1998, Supreme released a very limited number of Box Logo T-shirts featuring a background similar to Burberry’s popular Nova Check. Now, the two brands have officially come together, delivering the Supreme Burberry Box Logo in the form of t-shirts and hoodies.
Because of the history behind this release, the Supreme Burberry collaboration would have been a missed opportunity without the inclusion of some kind of Box Logo. Longtime fans will likely be elated at the opportunity to get their hands on an official version of the Supreme Burberry Box Logo in all its royal British glory. As the most iconic and sought after apparel piece in the world of streetwear, it’s always special when Supreme releases a collaborative Box Logo piece. Over the last few years, the brand has capitalized on the collaborative Box Logo, delivering it more often, even if only on special occasions. The Supreme Burberry Box Logo T-shirt deviates from its bootleg ancestor only in its authenticity and clarity of print, presenting the Box Logo with an official version of the luxury Nova Check pattern.
Since their collaboration with Louis Vuitton in 2017, Supreme has been significantly more apt to work with luxury brands and designers. In the years since 2017, the brand has released collaborations with Emilio Pucci, Missoni, Jean Paul Gaultier, and now Burberry. This collection, unlike those of the past, presents a well-delivered amalgamation of what both brands do best. Instead of creating something entirely new, Supreme x Burberry has taken both brands’ most iconic pieces and delivered them through the lens of the other. For Supreme, this has most obviously been the Box Logo T-shirt and Hoodie, which have now received Burberry’s official blessing. For Burberry, Supreme has taken the iconic Gabardine Trench Coat and slightly altered it, fitting the coat with a contrasting black leather collar and embroidered logos. Notably, the streetwear brand has left the Trench Coat’s most iconic feature, the Nova Check interior, entirely alone, preserving Burberry’s most recognizable pattern.
As a whole, the Supreme Burberry collection demonstrates the streetwear brand’s continued dominance and relevance in popular culture. Throughout growth, investment, new ownership, and changes in creative leadership, Supreme has largely maintained its ability to keep longtime fans of the brand interested and attached while also relating to newer customers. It’s always a challenge for a successful brand to maintain a connection to its roots while navigating the landscape of growth, but Supreme has held that tension pretty well.
