Sunglasses are one of those accessories that can really take an outfit from casual wear to star status, just like that. While the main function of sunglasses is to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, there’s also just something about the right pair of shades that gives you that aura of effortless confidence. You know, that IDGAF vibe people who wear sunglasses indoors seem to have. And while I don’t really recommend being one of those people who never take their sunglasses off inside (super sus if you ask me), I do highly advocate for prioritizing your sunglasses as a main component of your outfit. That said, it’s time to add some new shades to your seasonal lineup. Keep scrolling for 5 current sunglasses trends that will put you in that summer mood.

Dramatic Cat-Eyes

Nothing says chic and sophisticated than a pair of cat-eye frames. Audrey Hepburn enjoying her breakfast at Tiffany’s is the image that instantly comes to mind. While the cat-eye shape has always been a classic, this summer is all about adding some extra drama to the vintage-inspired shape. Oversized, elongated, and extra angular cat-eye styles are giving this timeless style a modern flair. I currently love the oversized cat-eye styles for an effortlessly chic “Stealth Wealth” type of look, like this pair from Gucci. The gold tone logo plaque on the curved arms is subtle enough for that touch of Quiet Luxury.

Oversized Builds

It’s time to give your extremely small, 90s-inspired sunglasses a much needed breather. Because thanks to the resurgence of everything Y2K, oversized sunglasses are back, and they’re bigger than ever. Channel your circa 2003 era with an oversized block shape. The always popular Off-White Virgil Square Frame Sunglasses is a modern choice that taps into the oversized trend while still looking fashion-forward. Pair these sleek shades with elevated basics and your favorite pair of sneakers for the perfect summer ready look.

Sporty Styles

You might have once thought people were crazy when they said dad-inspired running sneakers are going to be trendy one day.  And here we are. They’re back, and in a major way, as brands like New Balance and ASICS are currently dominating the sneaker scene. So hear me out when I say sporty sunglasses (or gas station sunglasses) are going to be back for summer. Am I crazy? Well, maybe a little but in a good way, I promise. Because I am definitely crazy about these Oakley Radar EV Path Sunglasses. The wraparound style gives you that anti-trend aura of confidence, while the purple and green hue make a style statement paired with your favorite athleisure staples. And if street style cool-girl Bella Hadid gives sporty sunglasses her stamp-of-approval, so should you.

That 70s Style

When it comes to fashion trends, it feels like we’re always having a love affair with the past. From the Y2K movement this year to the fashion crowd’s obsession with 90s minimalism, the phrase “that was so last year” can now be interpreted as a compliment. For this summer, the 70s are back, baby. Thanks to Billy Dunne in the popular Daisy Jones & The Six series, denim on denim and aviator sunglasses are rising in popularity on social media and in the streets. There’s just something so mysteriously cool about rocking a pair of aviators. And you can’t tap into this 70s trend without going for a pair of iconic Ray-Ban sunglasses. The Ray-Ban RB3449 Sunglasses will give you that instant rockstar look.

Color-Tinted Glasses

The saying goes, “seeing the world through rose-tinted glasses”. And while I fully support this optimistic view on life, it’s not just a rose tint you should be looking through this summer. Because tinted lenses in a wide range of hues are having a moment in sunglasses trends, from yellow-tinted to blue-colored shades. While dark, oversized glasses give you that aura of intimidating mystery, colorful glasses actually do the opposite. The transparency to the colored lenses feels welcoming and fun– two traits perfect for the summer season. The Prada Sunglasses are an elevated choice with that hint of hue in the lenses, while these Off-White Sunglasses have the bold blue color in the lenses and the frame for when you want to make a statement.
