Get outside this fall with the perfect wrist companion.

With fall in full swing, it’s the perfect time of year to hit the trails. Depending on your locale, a well considered kit will keep you prepared for anything mother nature can throw at you. A vital part of any function-first outdoor outfit is a proper watch. What makes a watch a great trail companion? Ideally, something lightweight that stays out of the way when not in use. The ability to take a knock or two doesn’t hurt, either. Here are 5 of our favorites available right now, on StockX.

Rolex Explorer

Let’s get the obvious choice out of the way first. The Rolex Explorer is as pure as it gets, with a singular focus on function. The slim dimensions and tight fit & finish make this easy to wear over the long haul, and won’t interfere with the motion of your wrist or arm, no matter how rough (or vertical) the trail may get. High visibility and even higher accuracy make the Explorer super easy and reliable on the go. This one gets bonus points for ability to pair with formal wear with ease as well.

IWC Pilot MK XVIII

This one may be a Pilot’s watch, but it’s got some great qualities that make it perfect for field wear. First off, the slim, brushed steel case is as practical as it is wearable, measuring in at 40mm in diameter, and a bit over 11mm in thickness. The dial is classic pilot’s stuff, with each hour clearly marked off with Arabic numerals, and a date at 3 o’clock. This all adds up to high legibility and unobtrusive presence on the wrist.

Tudor North Flag

Tudor used the North Flag to introduce their in-house MT5621 movement, a tough-as-nails certified chronometer. The North Flag was also a call back to the first Ranger models worn by the British North Greenland Expedition in 1952. The steel case with integrated steel bracelet wears easily thanks to its 40mm diameter, while the hybrid steel-ceramic bezel offers that extra bit of confidence when on the go.

Hamilton Khaki Field

The Khaki FIeld watch from Hamilton is about as straightforward as it gets. This is a tidy watch measuring in at 38mm and sporting an olive green reinforced fabric NATO strap. The dial marks each hour, along with sub markings that take it all the way up to 24 hours. There is no other clutter to get in the way, keeping you focused on what matters. Not only does this watch look the part, it’s comes in well under $500.

Casio G-Shock

Finally, if you’re looking for zero pretension on your hike, it’s tough to beat a G-Shock. Sure, a Rolex or IWC can take a knock, but you’ll be a lot less bummed when it inevitably happens to your G-Shock. Keeping it simple with the DW5600 gives you quick access to all the vital information along with a super wearable profile. Just keep a fresh battery in your pack, as the saying goes, “one is none, two is one”.
