The Cultivated Wrist

At present, the late ‘80s and mid ‘90s are enjoying a resurgence of sorts. Everything that’s old is new again, trends die and return, fashion is cyclical. How is all this effecting watch collectors and brands? A few ways, but the big one that can’t be ignored, is two-toned watches making a comeback. Pulling off the two-toned watch is no easy task, but these watches make it a lot easier. In this week’s edition of The Cultivated Wrist, we’re going two-toned.

Cartier Santos

Recurring fashion trends tend to work better on timeless designs, and the Santos from Cartier certainly falls into that category. It worked in 1904, and it works today. So, it’s no surprise that a two toned case just works here, even if it’s on a leather strap. It’s an intricate design and color execution, but, somehow, understated at the same time thanks to it’s well considered dimensions. The low Ask on this example currently sits just south of $6,000.

Rolex GMT-Master II

Rolex has a bit of a reputation for no-nonsense tool watches, as you may have noticed. Something else you may have noticed, the majority of Rolex wearers aren’t engaged in a daily struggle against nature. Rolex must have noticed as well because their current catalog is replete with precious metals, and their mixed metal watches, what they call Rolesor, are pretty stunning. Their latest work within the GM-Master II range included just such an example, the 126711CHNR, which may have been overshadowed by the return of a steel “Pepsi” bezel GMT, but it’s among our sleeper hits of the year. These are still fresh to market, so expect to pay well over retail until a more steady supply is introduced (which, in all fairness, may never happen). Act now on this one, with a current Ask at $21,999.

Tudor Black Bay

If you like the look of that GMT, but don’t have the appetite to raid the 401(k), check out this Tudor Black Bay in yellow gold and steel. This release from 2017 was a hit considering the in-house movement, optional distressed leather strap, and accessible price point. David Beckham in the adverts didn’t hurt, either. Our recommendation, opt for the bracelet and find your own strap. Jump on this example with a current Ask of just $3,500.
