Right from the beginning of her musical journey, JGrrey’s talent has been unavoidable. Bursting on to the scene with a standout live performance for COLORS Berlin, she immediately caught the attention of Manga Saint Hilare, a member of London’s legendary Roll Deep Crew. Hilare took her straight to meet prolific producer and Drake and Skepta collaborator, Nana Rogues. Since then, J has gone on to carve out a musical niche with her searingly honest songwriting, dry sense of humour and silky vocals.

After an incredible 2019, which included touring with Billie Eilish and a headline set on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury Festival, J has landed more famous fans in the likes of Jorja Smith, Annie Mac, Julie Adenuga, and DJ Target. We sat down with the neo-soul star to discuss her influences, her approach to self-care, and some of her most underrated artists.

What influences you?

The more I get asked this question the more I find it harder to answer. I usually just say everything and life, but then the more I say it the more cliched I feel… but it’s just the truth. Gravity inspires me, travel, people commuting to work, dogs shaking off water, plants growing, my mum and dad, reflections in glass or water, films, good music… even bad music. If you look hard enough there is inspiration in anything.

What’s the most overrated?

The fashion industry, shit rappers, sanity and Instagram.

What’s the most underrated?

Trees, nectarines, defunding the police, Kojey Radical, Manga St Hilare, Oldboy (the original movie), buffalo 66, Tungz, SAULT, and frogs.

What are you most excited about right now?

Getting back in the studio with Owen Cutts and Ed Thomas.

What’s next for you?

Honestly, I’m only moving at the pace the universe allows at the moment, so I’m unsure. I’ve written an insane amount of music… great music, and you’ll hear it soon. But right now, I’m just taking each day, each hour, as it comes. What’s next for me? A cup of tea, maybe I’ll watch Netflix, who knows!?

JGrrey’s latest single “Ain’t So” is available to buy and stream now.
