During Black History Month, itās important to remember not just the significance of black contributions to black communities, but to culture and society as a whole. The sneaker culture, in particular, has been heavily influenced by powerful black athletes, musicians, creatives, designers, actors, activists, and more. Over the years, sneaker brands have done a great job highlighting these individuals by dedicating a specific shoe toward a greater cause or message, one that above all speaks to diversity and inclusion. As we continue to honor black culture, letās take a look at five leading sneaker collaborations that made a positive impact in the sneaker industry.
Nike LeBron 14 BHM
Itās only fitting that we honor King James in this category as he has not only made history as the all-time leading scorer in NBA history, but he did so during Black History Month. James has been a beacon in our culture from his philanthropy and his willingness to give back to many communities to becoming this generationās GOAT on the court. Much like his other Nike silhouettes, the LeBron 14 BHM has become a notable pair from Jordan Brand. This sneaker celebrates black culture in sports, leadership, and beyond.
This limited edition sneaker is the epitome of strength and powerful movement. From the decorated marbling and effortless blending of black and white, offers a versatile look. Itās accented with pops of metallic gold on the Swoosh and midsole, with icy translucent rubber on the outsoles. For greater power on and off the court, the hexagonal Zoom Air units are positioned perfectly to assist with reaching greater heights.
Nike Air Force 1 BHM
One of Nikeās most recognizable Black History Month silhouettes is this Nike Air Force 1 BHM. Designed with intention to make a statement, this sneaker was first released in February of 2020 with a unique look and feelā literally. The details speak for themselves. From the complexity of the colorway to the high-quality material selection, this sneaker embodies the epitome of black excellence.Ā
The AF1 BHM is flushed with African textiles on its panels and overall construction. A unique combination of leather and mesh form the base, toe, heel, and collar. Get a feel of the distressed panels and frayed red Swoosh logo on the sides for a more worn design. Finish touches of yellow and blue suede with a tonal BHM embroidery on the tongue takes the cake. What a sweet silhouette.
New Balance 574 My Story Matters
To commemorate Black History Month in 2021, New Balance released their global campaign My Story Matters. This notable collection celebrates the power of Black stories, both in name and design. New Balance was intentional in honoring the spoken and unspoken voices within the black communities through their messaging and designs. The global athletic brand also featured two of their top ambassadors, musician and activist Jaden Smith and tennis pro Coco Gauff, to drive the NB commitment to leading with purpose.Ā
This collection did not miss the mark on celebrating diversity and resilience with black culture. Not only was āMy Story Mattersā the leading mantra for this campaign, the message was carried into a slogan for non-Black consumers to take part in the message as part of solidarityā āTheir Story Matters.āĀ
This sneaker tells a storyā both in messaging and in design. In addition to providing superior comfort, the 574 BHM is decorated with a unique black, burgundy, and purple colorway. In addition to footwear, the collection also featured a variety of apparel pieces.
Ā Air Jordan 1 Retro High Flyknit BHM
One of my personal favorite Black History Month silhouettes is the Air Jordan 1 Retro High Flyknit BHM. This sneaker was first released back in 2018 as part of the Air Jordan Black History Month collection. It serves as the only AJ1 Flyknit to have a BHM makeup.
Pan-African multicolor flag of green and red are prominent throughout for ultimate black excellence appeal. This lightweight shoe features Flyknit upper with gold Nike Air logos. The AJ1 High is finished off with black leather Swooshes and BHM branding on the insole.
Nike Kobe 9 Elite BMH
Black excellence takes form in this coveted version of the Nike Kobe 9. Much like Kobe Bryantās unstoppable skills on and off the court, the late basketball GOAT gifted us with some legendary silhouettes over the years. As we continue to remember her legacy and influential contributions to the game of basketball, weād be remiss if we didnāt mention some of his powerhouse kicksā especially for Black History Month.Ā
This ninth signature BHM Kobe is decorated in an inspired black and white makeup. The premium pattern takes on a bold, graphic upper with engineered mesh construction. Whatās most unique about the design of this shoe is the color placement on the exterior side versus the inner lateral portion. It almost looks like two completely separate sneakers. This classic two-tone sneaker is complimented by a tonal midsole and carbon fiber detailing.
