Back in June of 1984, Michael Jordan was drafted by the Chicago Bulls. Fresh off a gold medal winning Olympics in Los Angeles, MJ made his debut for the Bulls in the 1984-1985 NBA pre-season wearing the Air Ship. In November, Michael Jordan laced up the Nike Air Jordan 1 for the first time. The legend of the Air Jordan 1 being “Banned” is marketing gold, yet the truth behind the story might be slightly different than most remember, nothing could take away the impact that Michael Jordan’s first signature sneakers had on the next 30+ years of basketball footwear, especially the Bred Air Jordan 1.
MJ eventually wore the black and red Nike Air Jordan 1 during the 1985 Slam Dunk Contest, which is considered by most to be the greatest slam dunk competition of all time. It marked the first of many battles between Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins. Wilkins, aka “The Human Highlight Film” took home the win in the first battle with “His Airness” Michael Jordan but MJ would get the best of ‘Nique at slam dunk contests in the years that followed.
The black and red (aka “Bred”) colorway of the Air Jordan 1 may have been seldom worn by MJ but the colorway, which he called ugly and the “devils colors”, has become as legendary as the man himself in three decades since it first released.
