Spring might be one of the hardest seasons to dress for, but there’s something about a knitted piece that adds comfort and style to an otherwise cold decision. So before you start defrosting for summer, keep some sweaters and cardigans hanging in your wardrobe. Luckily for us, knits are perennial all year long.
While current forecasts still advise us to layer up, some pre-spring knits have a slightly different criteria. We often seek knits during the fall and winter months as a reliable means to keep us comfortable. Luckily, knitwear can easily be transitioned between seasons with top ranking members ranging from heavyweight sweats to breezy lightweight knits, just to name a few. Whether influenced by top luxury designers or straight-to-market brands, spring 2023 is seeking throw-on-and-go styles that trend must-haves while ensuring these new pieces will last well past this season.
Knitted up or knitted down, we’ve got you covered to effortlessly ease into any occasion for the breezy season. This curated collection of trendy knits is sure to get you into full spring.
CLASSIC & CASHMERE
Trend or not, classic knits are always on the agenda for spring. And what’s a better feeling than a luxurious cashmere sweater hitting your skin on a cool, sunny spring day? Worn under a denim jacket while running errands or draped around your shoulders while enjoying a coastal boat ride during a sunset, practical knitwear will never go out of style.
Much like your health, cashmere deserves to be handled with care. Whether purchased at an affordable price or as a stylish splurge, most classic cashmere sweaters or cardigans can upgrade your style with a hint of sophistication and a poised demeanor. What they all share is the ability to last season after season. Cashmere knitwear, with proper care, can be worn as a flattering and/or comfortable fit. Its rich quality and buttery-soft feel is the perfect extra layer of warmth during the spring season.
A great alternative, and less expensive, knit for the colder days could be opting for a wool or thicker crochet sweater. This style inspiration has always been a classic staple in fashion with its beloved vintage vibe.
It’s safe to say that a classic cashmere or wool sweater is the easiest way to introduce a casual knit to your rotation. Timeless in value and modest in style, the right purchase will shape well with wear. This could be a hefty investment, but will likely serve your spring rotation for years to come.
CROPPED CARDIGANS
The cropped cardigan trend is the perfect standout silhouette for the upcoming season. For those looking for a breezy, open-weave cardigan with a playful edge to help you galavant through the early days of spring, this one’s for you. It’s giving ‘90s sitcom and I can’t get enough of it.
Cropped cardigans generally range from oversized or fitted styles to wool or cashmere fabrics. My personal favorite is the fitted cropped cardigan. These silhouettes, much like the Jacquemus Le Cardigan, are especially well to pair with wide-leg pants or jeans, giving off that retro flair that we’ve seen casually make its way back into the zeitgeist. Whether eye-popping with an electric hue or a subtle artisanal flair, this statement style will turn heads the second you walk into a room.
BOLD PRINTS & PATTERNS
Bold prints have a way of injecting energy back into our wardrobes. I’ve always been a firm believer that clothes have the power to affect your mood and a bold, colorful cardigan or sweater is the ultimate mood booster. This season, designers and luxury brands have been convincing the fashion world of this theory from summer sandals to mini handbags. This time, bold accessories are taking a back seat to the splash of color society, while patchwork sweaters and gradient multicolor cardigans have become fashion’s main characters.
Go bold or go home because prints are here to stay this season. This spring staple seems to find itself in the knitwear catalog year after year, and it’s for good reason. Opt for swapping out your neutral basic crews for brighter colors and statement prints to put pops of color back into the breezy season.
ZIPPED KNITS
Layering up for Spring can be a challenge, especially when the weather can change in a second. Fortunately, a knitted zip-up can be the secret behind looking the part without freezing or getting too hot. Much like a buttoned cardigan, the zip-up adds structure, can be worn zipped up or down, or for an upscale or relaxed occasion. Half-zip, quarter-zip, or full-zip– the zippers are endless.
When it comes to tactical basics, the zipped sweater is often criminally overlooked. Some might say the look is stereotypically reserved for embarrassing dads or worn during formal occasions only. Across the board, this is a much unexpected trend for 2023. Fortunately for us, brands like Palace and Fear of God are using this season to modernize and elevate this style into a more sophisticated look for their knitwear capsules.
SHEER AND NOW
They say less is more and this moment belongs to sheer. From chest-baring shirts to crisp tailoring that’s full-length and see-through full-length see-through crisp tailoring, this transparent trend bares it all. Sheer reveals have been dominating celebrity styling from Rihanna to Cher and even Florence Pugh delivered a revealing moment when she wore the now infamous hot pink Valentino gown on the red carpet. But you don’t have to be at the same confidence level as these celebs to participate in this relatively risque trend. You can still easily elevate your style without showing too much skin.
From stepping out in our underwear to lounging around in lingerie, fashion has taken intimacy to a whole new level and we’re here for it. Some sheer knits with less material could be worn layered over tank tops, while more modest covers only give the illusion of see-through layers. Full transparency, this trend can be the perfect compromise between risque and professional. Be sure to keep an eye out for this trend.
