Vans Slip-On sneakers are a must for the summer and here’s why. Firstly, the Vans’ low-cut construction makes them a breezier option for hotter days. Secondly, the black and sail Checkerboard design gives a versatile look that is easy to wear with most tees and shorts. Lastly, the Vans Slip-On was made in 1977 in Califonia, predating the Nike Air Force 1 and Air Jordan 1, and gained worldwide acclaim before some of today’s other popular sneakers. It’s basically one of the OGs of casual sportswear. If you’re in the market for a pair of Vans for the summer and want to get a fit off for the season, check out StockX to put together A Perfect Fit for the Vans Slip-On Checkerboard.

The Vans Slip-On Checkerboard is one of the first models and colorways to remain part of Vans’ catalog of sneakers. Originally called the #98, the Vans Slip-On was a part of the limited number of models that the brand offered to customers back in 1977. The sneaker was inspired by a boat shoe, however, the shoes were used for less aquatic purposes and found new life in the skateboard parks of California. Skaters gravitated to Vans’ signature sticky waffle outsole that provided enough traction for tricks and rides. With support from skateboarding legends Tony Alva and Stacey Peralta, the Vans Slip-On became another instant hit. As for the classic Checkerboard design, that was Vans’ way of getting the Slip-On more in the lifestyle category. Before the #98 featured all of the patterns and colors that we know it for today, it first came in an entirely stark white colorway. As young skaters wanted to stand out from the pack, many would draw checkerboard patterns all over its canvas upper. In the 1970s, Steve Van Doren, current VP of Vans and son of co-founder Paul Van Doren, saw this trend, chose to adopt it for Vans’ manufacturing, and the rest is history.

Stüssy x Our Legacy Surfman Tee Blue

Stüssy is another California mainstay that is no stranger to Vans. Both were founded on the west coast and centered around skateboarding and surfing cultures, and the two brands have collaborated in the past. So matching these Slip-Ons with this Stüssy tee makes for a harmonious pairing. In 2021, Stüssy partnered with Sweden’s ready-to-wear brand, Our Legacy, on pieces such as this Surfman Tee. The tee features Stüssy’s signature script logo and “Our Legacy” in Stüssy’s classic rugged font. Blue cotton makes up the tee’s material and brings a bright color that’s ready for summer weather.
