Earlier this summer we brought you news of a new Speedy Tuesday Speedmaster from Omega, released via Instagram, in which all 2,012 examples sold out in a hair under 2 hours. This second Speedy Tuesday was dubbed the āUltramanā in honor of the vintage models fitted with orange timing seconds hand. The moniker itself is a nod to the short lived Japanese animated TV show featuring the Ultraman character. But does it live up to the hype? We go hands on to find out.
Before you get to the watch, youāre met with some seriously cool packaging. The box is octagonal with a major sci-fi vibe, and while itās fit and finish isnāt to the level of say, an MB&F case, itās just as imaginative and doesnāt cost anywhere near 6 figures to buy.
The watch itself wears like a Speedmaster, no surprise there as itās the same chassis as youād find on the reference 311.30.42.30.01.005. Itās 42mm, but wears a little smaller than that thanks to the tight, twisted lugs and short overhangs. The dial is the real star of the show here, if youāll excuse the pun.
The creamy hour marker plots with orange indices set a striking tone for the dial as a whole. The matte black dial hosts other orange accents in the form of the first three hashes on the minute totalizer (a nod to the character, whoās powers lasted 3 minutes), the āSpeedmasterā signage at 12 oāclock, and of course, the timing seconds hand. Thereās another accent, hidden in plain sight, but you need a UV light to fully reveal it.
Thatās the face of Ultraman himself within the hour totalizer at 9 oāclock on the dial. As cool as this feature is, the shape itself is difficult to distinguish, even when illuminated. When not under UV light, itās particularly difficult to place – but makes for a great easter egg.
Overall the Ultraman is a seriously cool watch, and the market seems to agree. MSRP was $7,100, but pre-owned prices are nearer to $10,000. If watches like the Snoopy and the original Speedy Tuesday are any indication, this could be just the beginning.
