This year’s biggest bag trends brought us pioneering changes, new versions of old favorites and breakout hits we weren’t expecting. It’s safe to say that the bag bounty of 2019 was very generous. From Virgil’s debut collection with Louis Vuitton, Fendi’s baguette bag, Dior’s saddle bag revival, Bottega’s The Pouch and Off-White’s Jitney, these are the bags that kept on giving in 2019, and made the year one to remember in the world of designer style.
Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton Keepall
Virgil Abloh’s now iconic Kaleidoscopic Prism Keepall from his debut SS19 collection for Louis Vuitton seemed to set the stage for 2019. This holographic coated Keepall features the iconic LV monogram print against an iridescent clear and pink coated canvas.
Off-White Jitney
Another Abloh hit, Off-White’s Jitney 1.4 “Cash Inside” bag was one of the most popular bags of the year and sold out quickly. The Jitney line was inspired by the Hampton Jitney bus line and took 18 months to develop. The design features Virgil’s iconic “quotes,” a smooth, milky leather, and a silver-tone “X” turn-lock.
Chloe C Bag
The Chloé C bag was a in-demand bag this year, showing up everywhere from the streets of Paris Fashion Week, to the arms of celebrities like Kendall Jenner. The C bag features a top handle, detachable shoulder strap, and gold-tone hardware. An ombré mini version of the C bag was also a popular choice.
Bottega Veneta The Pouch
When fall hit, Bottega Veneta’s “The Pouch” was everywhere. This minimalist clutch bag designed by Bottega Creative Director Daniel Lee defied logo-drenched bag trends and came out on top, selling out and becoming the it bag of the season. Coming in a variety of colors and textures, including Bottega’s iconic Intreccatio weave pattern, its classic shape is instantly recognizable, making it a piece that will stand the test of time.
Fendi Baguette
Over 20 years since its debut, the Fendi Baguette Bag made a triumphant return to the arms of fashion aficionados across the world. Often called the first “It” bag, the Baguette bag even brought out our favorite New York columnist Carrie Bradshaw for a new ad campaign, causing Sex & the City fans everywhere to rejoice.
Louis Vuitton Multi-Pochette Accessoires
Three bags in one we didn’t know we needed, the Louis Vuitton Multi-Pochette Accessoires was one of LV’s most sought after bags of the year. This bag features a hybrid of pochettes in various sizes in LV’s monogram canvas – the pochette accessoires, mini pochette and round coin purse also come with a removable LV strap and gold-tone chain.
Dior Book Tote
This Dior Book Tote was a popular piece both on and off the runway. First introduced in Dior’s SS18 collection, it’s become a signature staple for the French luxury house in a number of iterations. This tote features a red and black check canvas and a “Christian Dior” embroidered logo – oh and let’s not forget its spacious interior – perfect for carrying all the essentials and more.
Balenciaga Ville Bag
From Balenciaga’s 2019 Resort Collection, this Ville bag was one of the “must-haves” of the year. With its structured, eye-catching silhouette and Balenciaga’s new logo emblazoned on the front, the Ville has a detachable crossbody strap and comes in several sizes, too.
Prada Re-Edition Nylon Multi-Pochette Shoulder Bag
Call it the Prada Multi-Pochette, Hobo or Shoulder Bag, this star piece from Prada’s Re-Edition line suddenly became the #1 item on everyone’s wish list. A limited edition piece that was extremely hard to get, the Prada Multi-Pochette featured a main hobo bag with a chain, and a flip-phone shaped coin purse, both attached to a thick, adjustable Prada-inscribed shoulder strap.
MCM x BAPE Backpack
MCM’s collaboration with BAPE for a FW ’19 Capsule Collection generated the kind of anticipation that was reminiscent of the LV x Supreme partnership. The collection featured graphic-heavy apparel and leather goods, like this camo backpack, combining both MCM and BAPE’s signature logos complemented by gold-tone hardware.
