Teeing off from the epicenter of Los Angeles fashion and culture, Stephen Malbon is doing the unimaginable, making golf cool. Through his company, Malbon Golf, Stephen has collaborated with Nike, ECCO, and Puma, and counts people like Eric Koston, Schoolboy Q, and Keith Hufnagel as friends and potential collaborators. During the PGA Tour’s Detroit tournament, the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Stephen, Tour Pro Cameron Champ, and Skratch TV visited StockX. Check the Skratch TV video and “That’s 5” interview below.
The following interview has been lightly edited.
What influences you?
Everything influences me; my kids inspire and influence me a lot, as well. But I think nature would be my most significant influence.
What’s the most overrated?
Being mean is overrated. A lot of people are mean; times can be hard, which causes it to be difficult for people to be delightful. It’s hard to stay above the clouds.
What’s the most underrated?
Being nice and kind and not judging people. Sometimes people are put in situations that force them to do bad things. Instead of being afraid of someone, try taking the higher road, and find acceptance in helping them. Realize that they’re trying their best, just like you are.
What are you most excited about right now?
I’m excited about being alive today and having fun in Detroit!
What’s next for you?
My kids are next. I have a 7-year-old and a 9-year-old. One of them is a brilliant scientist, and the other one is really into sports. Both are blank canvases, so you can raise your children however you want. They might come home with real questions, and at that moment, you have an opportunity to mold this person; however, you want them to be based off a logical question. It’s exciting and scary all at once.
