We’ve got new neighbors! Today our friends at Nike open up their store at 1261 Woodward Ave in Detroit. The 22,000 square foot store will provide jobs for locals, and Nike has committed to hiring 80% of the employees from within a 5 mile radius of the store. The Detroit store is the first to give out grants through the expanded Nike Community Impact Fund. Detroit’s store will select eight local nonprofits or schools in November to each be given $5,000.
“We are Nike. We are fun. We’re Detroit. We’re No. 1,” the store’s employees chanted as they prepared to open the doors to the public. Michigan State University’s head basketball coach Tom Izzo and Dennis Van Oossanen, Nike Vice President of Global Merchandising, were on hand to welcome the crowd of 150+ waiting in line this morning. Clearly we’re not the only ones excited to have The Swoosh in the neighborhood.
