The Nike Tailwind may be the most important shoe in the company's history. It was the first to use Frank Rudy’s Air-Sole cushioning technology and left a mark on all Nike footwear for decades. 查看更多
When it originally debuted just in time for the marathon season in Hawaii in 1978, the Nike Tailwind was a quantum leap forward for running shoe comfort and cushioning. In the 1970s, NASA engineer Frank Rudy developed a technique for trapping gases in rubber which he realized could be used to create foot cushioning. When he showed his idea to Nike in 1977, Nike’s legendary Air-Sole technology was born. Because of his idea, Rudy became an integral part of the Nike design team that eventually created the Tailwind. The shoe was thus designed with a kind of “air bag” in its midsole that was meant to decrease impact and wear on feet. As the years went on, Nike would add other features to the shoe, like a sleek silhouette made of breathable leather, soft collars that hug the ankles and an upper body made of breathable mesh. Starting in 1992 and moving throughout the 1990s, these features won the hearts of runners worldwide. The shoe was revamped and introduced to the brand's Air Max lineup in 1996 with the Nike Air Max Tailwind 96. After an extended lull starting in 1998, the Nike Tailwind made a triumphant return in 2018. The shoe that long-distance runners once so loved even came back in the form of the Nike Tailwind 79 Stranger Things edition, a throwback to the original design which takes its name from the popular Netflix show.
