Although Topps has been producing baseball cards since 1951, it has held the exclusive license to produce official MLB trading cards in 2009. Ver más
The first product released with this new deal in place was the 2010 Topps Series 1 set. Since that time Topps and their subsidiary brand Bowman have been the only company to produce baseball cards that feature official MLB and team trademarks. Prior to 2009 companies such as Panini and Upper Deck were also allowed to produce licensed baseball card products. These brands gave the hobby iconic cards such as the Ken Griffey Jr. 1989 Upper Deck Star Rookie #1. While Topps flagships products such as Topps Series 1, Topps Series 2, and Topps Update sets continue to dominate the baseball card hobby, as well as Topps Chrome, in 2020 some brands outside of Topps have also gained popularity. Although it does not use any MLB trademarks or team logos, cards from sets such as Panini Prizm have begun to rise in value given their importance to the basketball and football card hobby. However, cards from Topps and Bowman sets of current stars such as Mike Trout, Ronald Acuna Jr., and Fernando Tatis Jr. will always be considered their core cards.
