For sports fans, May is generally one of the best months of the year. While there’s no American Football to watch, warmer temperatures mean it’s time for golf and baseball and playoff season begins for basketball, soccer, and hockey. Globally, soccer is the biggest sport on the planet and last week, Real Madrid defeated Manchester City in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. In honor of that victory, the adidas x Pharrell Real Madrid Jersey, which features a vintage Yohji Yamamoto reference, is this week’s StockX Pick of the Week.
In October of 2020, Pharrell and adidas came together as a part of their ongoing Human Race partnership to collaborate on the iconic kits of five different European football clubs: Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Man United, and Real Madrid. The collaboration delivered a hand-painted take on each team’s kits, pulling details from the different clubs’ archives and combining them with the 2020 season’s designs. Additionally, these jerseys were worn by each team in some capacity. For Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Manchester United the kits were worn during pre-match warm ups while Juventus and Bayern Munich actually wore them on field for a game during the 2020-21 season.
The adidas x Pharrell Real Madrid Jersey makes a very specific reference to the past in its creative reimagining of one of the Spanish team’s most iconic kits ever. Real Madrid wore a black Yohji Yamamoto-designed jersey featuring a wispy dragon graphic for the entirety of the 2014-15 season. For this collaborative version of the jersey, Pharrell’s Human Race team delivered a hand-drawn watercolor iteration of the dragon, logos, and Fly Emirates sponsorship on the front of the jersey. Originally released at a retail price of $90, the adidas x Pharrell Real Madrid Jersey is currently available below its retail price in some sizes on StockX.
Real Madrid’s recent win in the UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals and upcoming match against Liverpool isn’t the only thing that makes this jersey so exciting as we head into the summer of 2022. Across the internet, and primarily on Tiktok, a trend has begun to emerge that most are calling “Blokecore”. Recently mentioned in style pieces by Vice, GQ Australia, and The Times, Blokecore is basically the incorporation of soccer jerseys, preferably vintage, into the summer wardrobe. Derived from the word “bloke”, which is English slang that basically means “a normal common person”, this style trend could be described as a more global version of “Normcore”.
Though not specifically as a part of this trend, StockX does play home to a wide variety of soccer jerseys, both collaborative and not. At the current moment, our catalog features collaborative jerseys from collections like Palace x Juventus, adidas x Pharrell, and Stüssy x Paris Saint-Germain. In terms of traditional match kits from the teams themselves, we offer jerseys from Barcelona, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus, and more.
If you’re looking to jump on the “Blokecore” trend or just want to support Real Madrid as they face off against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League Final on May 28th, you can shop the adidas x Pharrell collection on StockX here.
