What’s Nike Air Max?

Nike introduced their Air Max line on March 26, 1987, a novel technological innovation that helped catapult the Swoosh to sneaker stardom. Former NASA aeronautical engineer M. Frank Rudy brought the idea of “captured air” (inert gas packed in a urethane airbag) to Nike as a footwear cushioning system. With some creative design work from footwear legend Tinker Hatfield, the Nike Air Max sneaker was born.
