Since the 2017 release of her debut mixtape, PURPULARITY, Sophiegrophy has been climbing to the top of the charts Down Under. With swagger, style, and razor-sharp bars for days, she’s been able to distill her Nigerian, New Zealand, and Australian roots into a heady blend of New Wave Hip-Hop and underground club culture. Celebrating the release of her debut EP Bold, Sophie took some time to talk to StockX for the latest installment of That’s 5.

What influences you?

Sophiegrophy

Experiences influence me. My father always said experience is the best teacher. The experiences I’ve been through and the experiences I’ve witnessed others encounter continue to influence me. I’m also influenced by fashion, happiness, and sadness. Those are my other three influences.

What’s the most overrated?

Sophiegrophy

Living the same robotic life and never going after what you want. Now is the time to be whoever you want to become: Dream big!

What’s the most underrated?

Sophiegrophy

The year 2019 is underrated. I know a lot of us couldn’t wait for 2019 to be over and get into 2020. Well, as it turns out, we’re all realizing that 2019 was a fantastic year.

What are you excited about right now?

I’m excited about my debut EP, Bold, and the immense amount of love I’ve received because of it.

Bonus Question: With roots in Nigeria, New Zealand, and Australia, how do you approach music-making?

Sophiegrophy

Each country has shaped my identity in many different ways, whereby it has allowed me into different chapters. The majority of my songs have references about one of the countries: If it’s not a name, it’s a code, or if it’s not code, it’s a phrase. That’s why it’s extremely important for me to present who I am and my experiences through my music so that it makes understanding my music as a whole a lot more simple.
