Five Trends To Watch for Spring

Seasonal transitions can sometimes be confusing to navigate, especially when it comes to your wardrobe. Do you still layer up or is it time to shed for lighter fabrics? Can you still wear dark palettes or do you make the switch to colorful, vibrant shades?

Truth is, it doesn’t  have to be as tricky as you think. You can keep the coats and bring out the shorts (or even wear them together). You can even wear black all season long. The runways have decided modern goth is a spring staple afterall.

Spring not only gives us March Madness, April showers, and May flowers—but also an exciting new wave of trends to try, whether it’s layering up with sheer fabrics, switching out your neutrals with metallics, or even wearing your underwear out in public (more on that soon). We’ve rounded up our top five trends to look out for this spring that you can recreate right now from StockX.

If there’s anything we’ve learned by now, it’s that anything (and almost everything) can be on trend. Just look at Julia Fox’s entire wardrobe or AREA’s fruit-inspired looks at their recent runway show. So if Julia Fox can rock a head-to-toe look made entirely out of handpicked fall leaves, then why can’t we step out in our underwear? The answer is: you can. And no, we’re not talking about going sans-pants altogether—even though Kendall and Kylie did show us it is stylishly possible. We’re talking about a trend that’s intimate but still more approachable for everyday wear: the boxer short.

With its lightweight fabric and looser fit, this underwear drawer staple will be the “It Short” for spring. The key to styling any boxer short is to pair the intimate with more tailored or structured pieces on top, whether it’s an oversized blazer or an unbuttoned white shirt. The Stüssy x Our Legacy Boxer Short is a classic blue pinstripe choice for an effortlessly cool look. If you still fear getting too intimate, the Prada Re-Nylon Shorts have that boxer silhouette but in a thicker nylon fabric that dresses this trend up for a night out.

If the Fall 2023 runway shows are any indication (Sandy Liang, Theory, and Kim Shui to name a few), red is going to be everywhere. Yes, we are aware we just mentioned fall and we’re talking about spring trends here. But why not get a head start and start wearing this fiery shade now before it feels too overcrowded? Because if you’re going to wear red, then you have to own that trailblazing, confident mentality the color inspires. The runways aren’t the only place we’ve been seeing red. Rihanna gave the crimson hue her own stamp-of-approval at this year’s Super Bowl, wearing an iconic custom red Loewe look. And let’s not forget that viral moment when Doja Cat attended the Schiaparelli Paris Haute Couture Show in head-to-toe red body paint and over 30,000 hand-applied Swarovski crystals. Speaking of viral, if you’ve been scrolling through Instagram lately, it’s more than likely you’ve been seeing red with all the hype around MSCHF’s Big Red Boots.

Safe to say, red isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. While we all want to channel our inner RiRi and rock a head-to-toe look, the more everyday approach is adding just a pop of fire to your ‘fit. Hailey Bieber is already on it, adding the shade to her favorite adidas Samba silhouette. Other favorites are the adidas x Gucci Gazelle and the Salomon Cross Low Drawstring

If you really want to turn heads this season, it’s time to go bigger and bolder with your accessories. Attention-grabbing hats were an unexpected, yet popular hit in many Spring 2023 collections. On the runways, Jacquemus showed off extraordinarily oversized hats at the “LE RAPHIA” show. While on the streets, designer cowboy hats and bold bucket hats are top of mind.

While Jacquemus’s LE RAPHIA hats surely grabbed attention on the runway, you can incorporate this trend more realistically in your current rotation by opting for hats with unique spins on classic silhouettes. Try going out of your comfort zone with quirky styles (like an oversized cowboy hat or floppy hat), unique fabrics (crochet or nylon) and bright colors and patterns (neon palettes and retro florals). The Jacquemus Le Bob Artichaut Frayed Expedition Hat makes a statement out of a classic bucket style with fringed details and a variety of bold colors and patterns to choose from that will top off any spring look.

The spring season is like a silver lining for the year. It’s when the clocks jump forward, the days last longer, and we’re all hopeful for the summer months ahead. So it only makes sense to interpret this silver lining quite literally in our wardrobes. Update your go-to neutrals by switching out your beiges and blacks with silver metallics. Usually a shade reserved for the festive season, the spring collections have shown us that this foil-like color can be worn at any time of year. Take Theory for example, who paired monochromatic looks with a simple, silver kitten heel. While Jil Sander’s Spring 2023 show added sparkling silver handbags to more relaxed, tailored looks.

The key to wearing silver is keeping it minimal and low-key. Give a glimpse of shine by pairing silver accessories with classic, modern staples. For sneakers, try the Nike Dunk Low in either Golden Gals Metallic Silver or Metallic Silver, or this year’s Jordan 14 Retro Metallic Silver. Each sneaker pairs perfectly with denim while also giving you the right amount of glitter without getting too galactic. For handbags, the viral Diesel 1DR Shoulder Bag in Mirrored Leather Silver is a stand-out staple for spring.

There’s no denying that Y2K fashion is still in its peak. Just take one scroll through Instagram and you’ll still see an array of halter tops, low rise denim, and oversized cargo pants. For this season, welcome back the return of another nostalgic staple: the cargo skirt. I think we can all admit we’ve been guilty of wearing this early aughts staple to our local mall outings back in the day (paired with Steve Madden wedge thong sandals, of course). This skirt has even graced red carpets believe it or not. But now thanks to Miu Miu’s viral cargo mini skirt on their Spring 2023 runway, this trend is taking a more modern, polished approach this season.

Whether you prefer minis, midis, or maxi skirts, the utilitarian look of multiple pockets and practical fabrics works on any length. The KENZO x Nigo Belted Military Skirt effortlessly blends utilitarian styles with classic tailoring for a cool streetwear meets high-fashion moment. To dress this trend down, try the Fear of God Essentials Women’s Cargo Skirt styled with Y2K accessories, such as mini shoulder bags and vintage baby tees. The mix of athleisure with nostalgia gives a subtle nod to the ‘90s while still keeping the look elevated and streetwear ready.
