Nothing beats the thrill of breaking a box in the trading card hobby. It is always a gamble, but there is no better feeling in the Hobby when you pull that chase card. Rarely does breaking lead to a profit, but Topps baseball has a product that offers incredible odds. Right now the 2019 Topps Series 2 Hobby Box may be the rare exception. The box comes with 336 cards and guarantees one auto or relic card.
The base set checklist clocks in at 349 players. That list includes the rookie cards for Fernando Tatis Jr., Eloy Jiménez, and the 2019 NL Rookie of the Year, Pete Alonso. This set also offers a variety of short print and super short print variations with the most coveted currently being Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s No Number Rookie card.
Despite the news of the suspension of the MLB season coming in early March, the 2019 Topps Baseball Series 2 Hobby Box saw a small increase in its price as it was consistently trading for between $150 and $175. In the last week though, that price point has come back down to anywhere between $130 and $140.
Meanwhile, the PSA 10 base rookie baseball cards of Alonso, Tatis Jr., Jiménez, and Gurrero Jr. have been doing extremely well. Pete Alonso’s Topps #475 has dipped a bit but has still been trading for over $60. Tatis Jr.’s Topps #410 traded as high as $95 before the MLB announced the delayed start to the season. It is now trading for around $70. Eloy’s Topps #670 PSA 10 has been in the $35-$40 range according to PSA auction data. Obviously, Gurrero’s No Number SP is the current chart-topper in comparison to the rest. It has been trading above $150 consistently in the last month.
While a box break never guarantees anything, there are few that have odds as good as the 2019 Topps Series 2 Hobby Box. Even with PSA grading services and BGS temporarily closed, now could be the time to invest in one of the best values in the baseball card hobby today.
