Black History Month is an important celebration where everyone can come together to talk, share, listen, explore, and learn about the central importance of the black experience in American society.

For this installment, we talked with StockX team member Miranda from the people and culture team.

As a part of the ongoing conversation around BHM, these answers have been updated thanks to input and dialogue from voices all over the StockX team.

What was your first experience with Black History Month?

My first experience with Black History Month was in elementary school. White kids in American arenā€™t broadly taught to understand inequality in the world, but early education helped me ground myself. We honored Black Americans that changed the course of American history by doing what we could to discuss equality at that early age. It was a great learning experience and really helped to open my eyes as a child, but it was obviously only the beginning.

How has Black History Month personally inspired you?

Itā€™s inspiring because so many movements, large or small, start with a small action or a small group of people taking action. With everything going on in the world right now, it really matters that you vocalize how you feel and support others to help make a change, no matter how small it might seem. Thereā€™s so much work to do, and everyone has their own spaces in which they can do their work. I know that we each have our limitations, but I hope to contribute my voice to those others doing important work around me.

Why do you think Black History Month is so important?

Itā€™s so important because it highlights our nationā€™s complex and often horrific history. It shows how far we still need to go. The month highlights the accomplishments of Black Americans across all aspects of American life and it serves to bring people together to have these crucial conversations, and remind us of what still needs doing.

Why is it important for StockX to honor Black History Month?

It is so important for StockX to honor this month because we need to support and acknowledge how each community contributes to the works StockX does, who we serve, and who creates the culture that we engage with. Itā€™s about recognizing that those voices are what makes this company successful and that we will only have a constructive future if we continue to recognize the contributions that Black Americans make to this culture every day.

What do you think is Black History Monthā€™s legacy?

I think Black History Monthā€™s legacy will inspire our future generations to continue to drive change. This month is about recognizing the culture and history of Black Americans and recognizing the institutional and personal obstacles that they have faced and often overcome without allies. We need to acknowledge our past and learn from it, and one month of limited conversations isnā€™t going to complete that work. Black History Month has to be a starting point, itā€™s not an endpoint or a complete narrative. This can only be a touchpoint to continue doing what needs to be done.
