Originally started in 2013, Off-White was founded by Virgil Abloh upon the closing of his previous brand, Pyrex Vision. As a brand built primarily on celebrity endorsements and hype, collaborations are woven into the brand’s identity. Fast forward to 2016, and it was regular news to see that Off-White would be collaborating with somebody new. At its inception, the brand almost had the vibe of a Supreme run by one of Kanye’s creative guys, and for the first few years, that was how it was. Collaborations released in limited quantities with brands like Champion, Babylon LA, Levi’s, Kith, Vlone, Mastermind, SSENSE, Chrome Hearts, and even the Spaghetti Boys. It seemed like a new collaboration was announced nearly every single week and with just about anyone who wanted one.
In 2017, things started to get a little bit more exclusive. As imagery began to leak of the first Off-White x Nike Air Force 1, the brand seemed to pull back on the rapid-fire collaborations they were previously giving out like candy. Whether because they were pouring everything they had into the Nike collaboration or felt like they secured the big fish and a sense of entitlement, Off-White slowed things down in the partnership department. After securing the Nike collaboration, gone were the days of Vlone and the Spaghetti Boys. From that point on, Off-White was far more selective with their collaboration partners, working with fewer brands but more often.
Since Off-White collaborated with Nike on “The Ten” in 2017, Virgil Abloh’s career has rocketed forward. Now he leads Men’s at Louis Vuitton and collaborates with Nike and Jordan Brand regularly. Abloh’s collaborative spirits haven’t dwindled since Off-White became more selective of who they work with. He is still doing projects with and for his friends, they usually just fall outside the label. Off-White is something sacred now, selectively collaborating with partners who will escalate the brand’s cultural capital, not just distribute it’s diag logo. Off-White x Nike
Off-White officially dropped its first collaboration with Nike in 2017. Dubbed “The Ten,” the release nearly snapped the newly released SNKRS app in half and included Virgil Abloh’s take on ten classic Nike shoes. Since then, Off-White and Nike have become great friends, working together often over the last two years. In the way of apparel, Off-White and Nike’s first collaborative release came prior to the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Their debut collection consisted of soccer gear, from team shirts and hoodies to jerseys and a soccer ball. Post-World Cup, the brands worked together on faux tuxedo t-shirts, running gear, and a lot of women’s apparel. Off-White x Jordan Brand
With the release of “The Ten,” Virgil Abloh dropped his first official Jordans and in the months to come, he’d follow that up with two more Jordan 1’s. Since bringing back three remixed classic colorways of the Jordan 1, Abloh has graduated onto new silhouettes, namely the Jordan 4 and Jordan 5. The Off-White Jordan 5s deviated from the design language used for “The Ten” and following releases, introducing something totally new: holes in the shoes. The Off-White Jordan 5 feature translucent netted panels that created the illusion that there were holes in the sneakers. The collaborative Jordan 5s released in February of 2020 in conjunction with the NBA All-Star Weekend alongside a five piece apparel collection that included a t-shirt, hoodie, jacket, pants, and a boiler suit. Later in 2020, Off-White and Nike came together again for the release of the two’s first collaborative Jordan 4. The Sail colorway of the Off-White Jordan 4 released on July 25th, 2020, as a women’s exclusive sneaker. Off-White x Chrome Hearts
Virgil Abloh loves Chrome Hearts. In an interview with Architectural Digest in 2019, Abloh said that Chrome Hearts is one of his favorite brands. He also mentioned in that interview that when he first reached out to Chrome Hearts, he was told “No Collaborations.” That was in January 2013 but now, Off-White has not only secured their collaboration, they’ve secured several. The pair’s first collaboration featured two t-shirts and a trucker hat and was released at Art Basel in 2015, two years after Virgil was told “No Collaborations”. Off-White and Chrome Hearts have collaborated only a few more times since then; once in 2016 on a t-shirt capsule and then twice in 2018 on a hoodie and several t-shirts for Art Basel. Off-White x Chrome Hearts pieces are extremely rare and only surface every so often. Shop the orange Off-White x Chrome Hearts hoodie below.
Off-White x The Simpsons
Off-White’s collaboration with the Simpsons officially released in the spring of 2019 after being shown at Paris Fashion Week for SS19 in June 2018. The collection, titled “BUSINESS CASUAL”, was centered around the idea of rebellion against traditional dress codes with Bart Simpson featured as the muse. Tying together Bart Simpson and the idea of business casual dressing may be something of a stretch but the collection was well received by fans of the brand. The Simpsons collaboration, and the rest of the SS19 collection around it, ended up being the very first full season off Off-White added to StockX. Despite being well received by fans of the brand, most Off-White x The Simpsons pieces now trade for below retail on StockX. Off-White x Undercover
Named “UNDEROFFWHITECOVERS”, Off-White and Undercover’s 2019 collaboration was not subtle in its mashing together of the two brand names and logos. The collaboration featured Jun Takahashi’s take on imagery and design cues held closely by both Off-White and Undercover. The collection included 14 pieces from t-shirts, to hoodies, to shorts, a pair of jeans, and a small bag. Every t-shirt featured the combined brand name, “UNDEROFFWHITECOVERS” and some form of the brand’s logos through a dark lens, delivering graphics of ghoulish hands, skeletons, and poison apples. The collection released at a number of stores around the world and on both Off-White and Undercover’s web stores and mostly sat. Nearly every piece from the capsule can now be found on StockX now for below retail. Shop a selection of the collaboration below!
