Travis Scott x KAWS x Fragment T-shirt: StockX Pick of the Week

We’re nearly three quarters of the way through 2021 and as we approach the holiday season, a time that tends to be heavy with collaborative releases, several large partnerships are already behind us. Among the highly anticipated collaborations to have already released in 2021 is the Travis Scott x Jordan x Fragment partnership, which came in the form of a Jordan 1 High, a Jordan 1 Low, and a small apparel collection. Alongside that drop was an apparel collection between Travis Scott and Fragment that didn’t include the official participation of Jordan. As a part of that merchandise collection, Scott and Fragment brought in a third party in the form of KAWS, delivering two collaborative t-shirts.

This KAWS adorned T-shirt has unquestionably been the most popular piece from the Travis Scott x Fragment collection. Most pieces from the release feature a chaotic collage of graffiti and graphics and this t-shirt is no different, delivering a grayscale mash-up of Travis Scott, KAWS, and Fragment branding on both the front and back. The Travis Scott x KAWS x Fragment T-shirt released on July 28th, the same day as the Travis Scott x Fragment Jordan 1 High.

The KAWS inclusion was not random. 2021 marks 25 years of artwork from KAWS and the artist has been celebrating the anniversary. With three months still to go this year, KAWS has opened two retrospective exhibitions and released several collaborative apparel collections. These apparel collaborations have almost exclusively taken place with prominent Japanese designers, which is where Fragment comes in.

So far in 2021, KAWS has collaborated with Comme des Garçons, sacai, Uniqlo, and Human Made. With all of these partnerships either announced or released by the delivery of the Travis Scott x Fragment Jordan 1, it was already likely that some kind of KAWS x Fragment collaboration would eventually be announced. The inclusion by Travis Scott for a release shortly after KAWS opened his Tokyo First Exhibition felt right at home.

This collaboration also shows the unending power of the Travis Scott cosign, which runs free without boundary. Scott has now added not only Fragment and KAWS to his collaborative arsenal in 2021, but Mastermind, Neighborhood, and Anheuser-Busch (in case you were wondering who makes and distributes Travis Scott’s Cacti). If Travis Scott’s collaborative presence wasn’t already omnipresent, it is now. 

Travis Scott’s cultural penetration has been a massive success at every level. His name and brand have met popular culture at-large through collaborations with the likes of Nike, Jordan, McDonald’s, and Anheuser-Busch. But it doesn’t stop there, Scott has also been welcomed with open arms at the sub-cultural level, demonstrated by collaborations with iconic brands and personalities like Fragment, Neighborhood, KAWS, Mastermind, Virgil Abloh, Fortnite and more. Travis Scott has inexplicably and effortlessly made himself relevant to cultural consumers at every level and if we had to say, it’s his world and we’re just living in it.
