Supreme brought out the big guns for their first drop of 2021. The Spring/Summer 2021 lookbook and preview was made available just three days before the brand’s first release of the year and it was the collaborative KAWS Chalk Logo Hoodie that received the most pre-drop hype. Supreme then included that hoodie and a matching skate deck in their first release of SS21, unloading their most hyped item of the preview on the first day of the new season. The Supreme KAWs hoodie closely resembles a Box Logo, though it will be mostly up to fans and critics whether or not the chalk logo will be welcomed into the hallowed halls of the royal Box Logo family.

A Supreme x KAWS release had been rumored for multiple seasons prior to SS21 and after last year’s Murakami collaboration on the COVID-19 Box Logo, those rumors felt even more realistic leading into this year. The streetwear label and artist have worked together before, so a reunion was never totally out of the question. For their first collaboration in ten years, Supreme and KAWS released a simple retro version of the Chalk Logo, which was originally featured on t-shirts in 2011. Supreme and KAWS’ working relationship started in 2008, when they released a t-shirt featuring a mashup of both brands’ iconic Kate Moss imagery from the early 2000’s. That single t-shirt in 2008 was dropped in celebration of the 10 year anniversary of Supreme’s Daikanyama store in Tokyo and was actually created in collaboration with KAWS’ now-retired clothing brand, Original Fake. This year’s partnership marks the third time that the two brands have worked together in a professional capacity, with the first being in 2008 and the second in 2011. While the box logo-esque hoodies are an exciting Week 1 piece, we’re hoping to see more diverse designs released through the partnership over the course of SS21.

The 2021 Chalk Logo has been released in the form of hoodies and skate decks so far but after the last two years, we’ve got reason to believe that Supreme and KAWS may have more up their sleeves. Supreme has never been one to waste a collaborative partnership and it’s become rather regular for them to only give a taste of what’s to come in the lookbook or preview. Leading up to the FW20 season, Supreme x The Smurfs was one of the most anticipated collaborations of the season. In Week 1 of FW20, only a few pieces were made available, leaving some fans of the brand disappointed. Throughout the remainder of the season though, Supreme dropped a number of additional Smurfs pieces, including several that were not originally featured in the preview. The same has taken place over the last two years with Supreme’s yearly release of Box Logos. The brand featured only their Box Logo Hoodies in the previews of FW19 and FW20 but by the end of both of those seasons, the brand had dropped t-shirt versions of them as well. The most recent Supreme Motion Logo, featured as a part of SS20, got the same treatment. We cannot say for certain that we’ll see more from the Supreme x KAWS collaboration, like new designs or cut and sew pieces. What we can say is that it’s not out of the ordinary for that to happen, especially when it’s already been made clear that these two are working together.
