Over 25 years, Supreme has made an accessory for just about everyone. If you love coffee, accessories like the Supreme Stacking Cups have you covered. If you enjoy spending time by the pool, Supreme has also released multiple pairs of goggles and swimwear. Those who spend less time at home and more time travelling are no exception to Supreme’s all-encompassing accessory empire. For the jetsetters of the world, the Supreme Rimowa collaboration has become the ultimate luggage grail since its release in 2018.
The luggage collab resulted in the release of four items, two 45L suitcases in red or black, and two 82L suitcases in the same two colorways. This SS18 collaboration marked the first time that the two brands would come together. Upon release, the luggage sold out instantly on Supreme’s site and despite the high retail prices of $1,600 for the 45L and $1,800 for the 82L, both resell on StockX for more than double their original prices. Since dropping, the luggage has been seen being rolled around by the likes of Justin Bieber and Bella Hadid which likely plays at least a small factor in the suitcase’s eye-popping resale prices.
Since Supreme Rimowa first released in SS18, Rimowa has gone on something of a collaboration spree. Just a few months after Supreme dropped their SS18 collaboration, Rimowa also collaborated with Virgil Abloh’s Off-White, delivering a transparent 36L suitcase and a 49L suitcase featuring the brand’s iconic Industrial Belt. Just a few months later, in December of 2018, Off-White and Rimowa would collaborate again on two more transparent 36L luggages. Last fall, Rimowa joined up with Supreme again, this time on spiderweb-covered Cabin Plus and Check-In suitcases. Notably, the second Supreme Rimowa collaboration did not perform as well on the resale market as the first, with both suitcases trading on StockX for hundreds of dollars below retail. Outside the streetwear world, luxury brand Dior released a 13 item collaborative collection with Rimowa in November of 2019.
Under the current circumstances, with travel on hold, it’s unlikely that customers are searching for luggage, which may have an effect on the demand for any new Rimowa collaborations. As the world continues to navigate this new normal, it’ll be interesting to see if the collaborations based around travel will shift to collaborations around staying home. Unsurprisingly, Virgil Abloh seems to have been prepared for both situations, having now collaborated with Rimowa on the travel end and IKEA on the homewares side of things.
