What’s a better way to cap off the StockX Chicago Drop-Off than with a “That’s 5 Chicago” featuring BJ The Chicago Kid? We caught up with the “Turnin’ Me Up” and “Church” singer just a few days after the release of his newest project, “1123.”

Learn more about BJ The Chicago Kid in his “That’s 5 Chicago” below.

The following has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

How has Chicago influenced you?

Chicago has influenced me and my world in many ways, including my understanding of the world and how to dress. Chicago teaches you when to talk and when to shut up. If you’re a creative in any kinda way it definitely influences your creative. You’re forced to take very little, or nothing, and create something.

What is most overrated, right now?

Racism #FreeRocky

What is most underrated, right now?

My music.

What advice would you give to the next generation of Chicago creatives?

My advice will be in question form: “Are you willing to be alone and/or misunderstood for 5 minutes for the world to understand you forever?” Remember, everything was doubted at one time, including the products we use every day. From what we wear to the cars we drive to our heroes, they’ve all been doubted at some point. Think about that. ??

What’s next for you?

I’m always working on new music. Getting into acting and writing films. Scoring. Enhancing my brand South Side Survivors and helping the youth in my city.
