To help celebrate our StockX Chicago Drop-Off, we are continuing our “That’s 5 Chicago” series with visual artist and creator Louis De Guzman. Louis recently showcased his geometric work, including the limited-edition blue version of his Bart Simpson-inspired sculpture, “ELEVATE,” at ComplexCon in Chicago.
Check out the next installment of “That’s 5 Chicago” with Louis De Guzman below.
The following has been edited for length and clarity.
How has Chicago influenced you?
Chicago has influenced me in many ways: including my personal experiences growing up in such an iconic and bold atmosphere that helped me to develop this thick skin, and the people I’ve met along the way that embodies the work ethic, passion, and hustle of a Chicagoan. It is so influential within my work. My daily routine always starts with reminders that I’m a part of such a strong community. This community continues to break barriers and speak volumes for one another while we all continue to get out our dreams.
What is most overrated, right now?
Approval and acceptance by creating just to beat the clock and to stay relevant are overrated. It truly takes away the organic nature and fun of our creativity and body of work. It is not a competition and the more we treat it like one, the more our work loses its true focus and meaning, in my opinion. It loses value and substance at that point. It’s crucial to be patient and to stay true to ourselves and to remind ourselves why we started this in the first place, way before social media.
What is most underrated, right now?
Most underrated: lessons, experiences, and patience. Losing sight of the journey and fast-forwarding towards the successful moments without living and learning through the obstacles and barriers of what it takes to become the greatest version of ourselves.
What advice would you give to the next generation of Chicago creatives?
Be patient, be kind, accept failure, and most importantly, have fun.
What’s next for you?
I’m currently in heavy development mode on a few projects. The team and I have been working hard, and I can’t wait to share them with the world. Rad times ahead!
Bonus Question: Was that 5?
Maybe one more would do? Next year, make the series “That’s 6.” Calling it now!
