Marc E. Bassy

San Francisco native Marc E Bassy has been crafting California-inspired R&B and soul music for the better part of the last decade. Most recently, Bassy released his debut album as an indie artist, “PMD.” In the runup to the album release, Bassy took a moment to talk with StockX about his influences, hard-bottom shoes, and getting excited to tour behind his new album for the latest installment of “That’s 5.”

The following has been lightly edited.

What Influences you?

I’m influenced by everyday life, competition, ex-GF’s, the news, and being hungover. My daily life is my influence; all things I read, listen to, and watch.

Most overrated?

Cars. They depreciate, and they’re bad for the environment. I think being social is overrated these days. People lose their critical thinking skills and fall into whatever echo chamber they frequent on social media. Being by yourself, and not on your phone, gives you time to discover how you truly feel about something.

Most underrated?

Hard bottom shoes. They make you feel like a boss, you can still be comfortable, and they make you taller! People are so obsessed with sneakers when they could really drip out and throw some leather things on and feel like films.

What are you most excited about, right now?

I’m very excited about how culture is shifting; there is a lot of dope R&B music coming out. This new wave reminds me of when I was a kid and D’Angelo and Musiq and Lauryn Hill were making classics. It’s an exciting time right now.

What’s next for you?

I’m excited to drop my new album and tour the material at the top of the year. We’ve worked on “PMD” for over 18 months. It’s finally coming, and I hope everyone is ready for it.

Bonus Question: Was that 5?

Pretty sure.
