That's 5 | Patrick Topping

One of the contemporary faces of house and techno, Patrick Topping has forged a path that’s taken him from playing clubs in the North-East of England, all the way to a summer residency in Ibiza.

Check our interview with the DJ and producer below.

The following interview has been lightly edited.

What influences you?

The tracks which I play out in my sets end up shaping the music I make because hearing those tunes out loud and seeing the reactions they get gives me an even greater appreciation of them. I fall in love with the songs I play because they develop such vivid links to certain moments. I then try to recreate these musical moments in the studio.

Most overrated?

I’m not really sure, as a lot of the time, things tend to be popular for a reason. Even if they aren’t what I’m into, I can see why a lot of people do connect with them. I’m trying to be more positive generally now anyway, so I’m going to swerve slagging anything off here!

Most underrated?

There are a lot of underrated artists who I am going to be pushing with my new label, TRICK. One, in particular, is Elliot Adamson. I’ve been playing his music for years now and it’s always some of the most stand-out in my sets. Bryan Kessler is another underrated guy who is about to go next level.

What are you most excited about, right now?

The second TRICK release is about to drop, which features three new tracks, followed by TRICK 003 in September. Something else which I’m so excited about is the launch of TRICK Events. More info coming soon, but they’re the biggest shows I’ve ever put together!

What’s next for you?

I have a couple of projects in the pipeline, the first being a remix for Robyn. The second is my new EP, “Turbo Time,” which will be the second release on my label. This EP is a complete flip in vibe to the first, which was darker, more techno style. “Turbo Time” is a big house track and the B-sides have a distinct feel too—”Wa Gan” is darker tech house and “Galaxy” is more melodic.

Bonus Question: Was that 5?

Yeah, I think so!
