Stüssy was not always the powerhouse streetwear label that we know today. In the late 80s, it began as a name for the custom surfboards Shawn Stüssy would make for friends and surfers in Laguna Beach, California. To promote the boards, Stüssy would screenprint his graffiti-influenced hand written name on t-shirts and shorts, which shortly became his company's logo. See More
Stüssy's rise to streetwear stardom was not planned, it happened by accident. In a 2013 interview with Empire Ave, Shawn Stüssy explained that while at a tradeshow for his surfboards, stores were more interested in his promotional t-shirts than his boards. He ended up selling out of thousands of t-shirts by the end of the show, proving that there was a demand for his clothing. After teaming up with his friend Frank Sinatra Jr. in 1984, Stüssy became an official brand. The clothing drew inspiration from many of the cultural shifts that were happening at the time. Meshing the cultures of music, art, skateboarding, and surfing, Stüssy was quickly adopted by underground subcultures across the world. Prominent trend-setters in each space would become a part of the "International Stüssy Tribe" and promote the brand around the world. The Tribe still exists and are a big part of the brand's relevancy to this day. Stüssy is known for their high-quality clothing at affordable prices. They were one of the first brands to release caps and varsity jackets that were not affiliated with sports teams. Blazing a path of their own, Stüssy is recognized as one of the first real streetwear brands.
