Introducing ghostwrite

The brand is called ghostwrite. The toys are called ghosts. And this week, for the first time ever, you can buy one

ghosts are next-gen Bearbricks. Like Bears, ghosts have no name, no face, no gender. The ghost, itself, is not a character. Rather, it is a blank canvas, a ‘platform’ toy which exists solely as a silhouette to host collaborations with other brands and artists.

“That’s why we called the company ‘ghostwrite’”, explains Josh Luber*, the company founder. “That’s the ethos of the brand: ghosts tell stories. Usually, other people’s stories. Always, stories that matter in culture”.

ghosts tell stories

For their first public release (and their earlier Friends & Family releases), the brand is telling their own story. But going forward, most ghostwrite releases will be collaborative, and the ghosts will “tell other people’s stories”. ghostwrite has already announced upcoming collaborations with several culturally-relevant partners, including Eastside Golf, Rocky’s Matcha, the NBA, and many others.

Over the past year, ghosts have been popping all over the place – at events and boutiques; at conferences and exhibits; on celebrity shelves and social media feeds.

There are ghosts at Urban Necessities, Zero Bond, and Toy Tokyo. Mike Amiri has a ghost. Jackson Wang has a ghost. You can see them all @_ghostwrite_ on Instagram.

But even if you saw the toys around, there wasn’t a way to actually buy any of them. Until now.

The brand is launching with their first publicly-available release this week: the ghostwrite “One” (catch the live auction here). And some Friends & Family ghosts are already available on StockX now.

Uncommon Collectibles

Like the best sneakers, trading cards, and designer toys, ghosts are built with long-term collectibility in mind. They come in limited, numbered editions that will never re-release or restock. They feature packaging that is built for grading and trading. They tell stories that matter for current culture, and will matter for collectors for years to come. ghostwrite thinks this is unique in the collectible toy world.

“The words ‘limited edition’ and ‘rare’ and ‘collectible’ are used so often they’ve become meaningless,” says Luber. “Yet, ghosts actually are those things. ghosts are collectibles made by collectors for collectors”.

When asked what word he would use to describe them, Luber responded: “The word we use is Uncommon”.

StockX x ghostwrite

ghostwrite and StockX are working together to create the best possible experience for collectors.

From Day 1, StockX will be the official resale partner for all ghostwrite drops. When a new release sells out on ghostwrite, it will be immediately available to Buy and Sell on StockX. In the near future, we’ll be rolling out new integrations to facilitate buying and reselling ghosts on our platform.

We’ll have more information on this partnership in the weeks and months ahead. But in the meantime, check out the first ghostwrite drop, and start collecting ghosts on StockX today!

*If his name sounds familiar, that’s because Josh Luber was also a co-founder and first CEO of StockX. He also may have done some videos for us back in the day. And besides Josh, there are several StockX alumni who are now working to build ghostwrite. So you might say we’re rooting for them.
