This article is part 9 of 14 in the series: Five Years Of StockX

Monica Dubray is an Art Director with the Creative Department in Detroit. Since 2019 she’s been ensuring that StockX always looks right. As part of StockX’s five-year anniversary celebration, we caught up with team members, including Monica, to talk about life as a StockX team member.

The following has been lightly edited.

How did you hear about Stock and why did you want to join the team?

I honestly thought StockX was a phishing scheme on LinkedIn when I first heard about it. Seeing so many open “Streetwear Authenticator” positions seemed like a red flag before a close friend of mine started as an Art Director in the Creative Department and explained what the company was all about. When another AD position focused on European creative became available, I jumped at the opportunity to join a growing team with amazing talent and ideas worth sharing with the world.

What is the most exciting aspect of working at StockX?

It’s all about my team. Being a part of the StockX Creative Department is like being given the keys to a racecar, and everyone on the track is an incredible driver. We move fast and do whatever we can to move things over the finish line in the coolest, most engaging way possible. Sure, the external partnerships are exciting. Working on projects with people like Sarah Andelman, Slowthai, and other amazingly talented people make me feel so thankful and lucky, but I work with my stellar team every day.

Your most memorable day on the job?

Meeting my team in London for the first time was the best thing ever back when I was doing any and all creative strategy and design for EU. I loved working with the EU team remotely, and being with them in person for the first time was like meeting my second work family.

What’s been the most surprising part of your job at StockX?

The most surprising part of my place within the StockX-verse has been how much input and change I’ve been able to put into effect within my department. When I started, StockX was functionally a start-up. I’ve often had the unique experience of working with my teams to build things like scalable localized creative workflow and cross-continental communication between our regional sub-marketing teams. I’ve also been surprised at how opinionated the Creative Department is when it comes to food. Just because you know where to get the “best pizza in Detroit” doesn’t mean you’re right.

In what ways do you think the secondary market will change in the next 5 years?

I think 2020 was a wake-up call on many fronts. I have high hopes that we’ll start seeing the long-term effects of the resurgence of the civil rights movement, and sustainable practices in supply chain management and the secondary market. What happens when the industry starts to truly reflect and represent “the culture” from which it’s inspired? From which it profits? How do we sustain this industry amid a climate change crisis? These are big questions we’ll all have to start answering whether we’ve procrastinated on the homework or not.
