Founded in 1964 by Doug and Susie Tompkins, The North Face started from humble beginnings as a rock climbing and hiking shop in San Francisco. The couple operated the store for two years until it was sold to Kenneth "Hap" Klopp who took the store to new heights. Under Klopp, The North Face began manufacturing their own products for the store. In 1971, the signature "Half Dome" logo was created by David Alcorn, paying homage to the peak in California's Yosemite Park.
