Many characteristics of Nike's Air Jordan 9 series were influenced by Japanese culture. In this shoe, Tinker wanted to showcase Michael Jordan's global influence. The right and left shoes feature different terms, including "Independence," "Freedom," "Sport," "Athletic," "Hope," "Intense," "Graceful," "Force," and "Dedicated." The Jordan 9 was featured on the Michael Jordan statue in front of the United Center in Chicago to symbolize Jordan as a "global superstar." The first release of this iconic sneaker was in 1993, and the shoe was re-released in 2002.
