The Jordan 1 Retro High Shattered Backboard 3.0 is set to release this Saturday, October 26th, and so far pre-release numbers are leading us to believe a big win for the people is on the way. Shattered Backboard colorways have been a craze ever since the original Shattered Backboard 1 released in the summer of 2015. This has been by far the most popular non-OG AJ 1 color scheme and Jordan Brand has taken notice. Let’s look into why the Shattered Backboard 3.0 could be the most accessible release in its lineage and the factors behind it.

In June of 2015, a star was born. No, not Lady Gaga – the Air Jordan 1 Retro Shattered Backboard. What started as a regularly-scheduled general release transformed into a frenzy on the secondary market. Word of mouth slowly spread about the insane leather quality of these shoes and the following summer, prices began to skyrocket. This AJ 1 has been increasing in price continually for the last three years. In the past year, this shoe has posted an average resale price of $935 and a premium of 484%. As a result of the unexpectedly high demand, Jordan Brand decided to follow up with a series of alternate Shattered Backboard designs.

With the 3.0 almost within arms reach, there are now three follow up retro Shattered Backboard releases, those releases being the Reverse Shattered Backboard (2016), Satin Shattered Backboard (W – 2019), and Shattered Backboard 3.0 (2019). Although all of these Jordans still have a significant mark up in the secondary market, none have topped the original Shattered Backboard 1. The original’s stand-out quality may have something to do with this, but again, the answer lies in the numbers.

Jordan Brand appears to have been increasing production quantities according to our total sales and pre-release sales numbers. Pre-release sales of the Shattered Backboard 3.0 are already close to topping the total sales numbers of the Satin Shattered Backboard, which was one of the hottest releases of the summer. This sky-high number of pre-release sales hasn’t slowed down price premiums. The Shattered Backboard 3.0 has resold at an average price of $357 and a premium of 123%. These pre-release numbers are 58% higher than those of the Reverse Shattered Backboard, a shoe that has matured throughout the years, reaching an average resale price of $560 in the last twelve months. This is impressive considering the 3.0 has already been selling in such a large quantity.

How will prices for the Jordan 1 Retro High Shattered Backboard 3.0 respond after their official release, when supply fully hits the market? Based on the high supply and recent downward trend in premiums, we expect this shoe to be highly accessible at a decent price following the release. The material selection of patent leather has caused dialogue in the community leading to polarizing opinions. Hate it or love it, Shattered Backboard 1s tend to gradually increase over time, so this release is definitely something to keep on your radar.
