Screen Time With Thibo Denis

Growing up in the suburbs of Paris, Thibo Denis first got exposed to sneakers from a young age thanks to a fascination with American culture, and in particular, Nike. Like most Parisian teens at the time, Denis became infatuated with legacy styles such as Air Max, Jordan and Air Force 1, and the stream of collaborations that made them the stuff of legend.

What started as an obsession with collecting sneakers has led to a professional career in the footwear industry, where he pours his passion into some of the most forward-thinking and covetable shoes in the market right now. Denisā€™ Instagram feed is testament to his ongoing devotion to sneakers, fashion and design, and you often get a chance to see his travels around the world and unseen prototypes of his latest creations.

Here, @samutaro jumps on WhatsApp with Denis to discuss the world of sneaker design, his personal style and some of his favourite sneaker releases of 2020

Samuel: Hey Thibo, HNY! Howā€™s it going? Thibo Dennis: Hey Sam, all good... very nice to rest a bit and spend time with family for the end of the year Samuel: Where are you right now? Thibo Dennis: Paris. I live there, I grew up in the suburbs of Paris. **INSERT PHOTO OF THIBO AT HOME Samuel: I miss travelling to Paris for fashion week. Menā€™s shows would usually be starting right now in London Thibo Dennis: Thereā€™s such a good energy during Fashion Week in Paris. Itā€™s always a good 10 days of shows and time with friends that come to visit. We all miss this a lot. Thibo Dennis: Iā€™ve been lucky to keep in contact with all my friends around the world and keep sharing what we love to talk about ... sneakers Samuel: Yeah for sure, Paris is always one of the best cities for shows. Samuel: Iā€™m sure we would have got to do this interview in person if Iā€™d been there! Thibo Dennis: For sure and would have been nice ā€¦ I meet a lot of people through IG but itā€™s always different to meet the person and be able to react to something instantly Samuel: For sure, IG is where we first connected through our shared passion for sneakers and fashion Samuel: And thatā€™s what we got you on here for today! Thibo Dennis: Exactly! And I was interested in your profile because beside the images, you go way deeper than only what we see. I feel like IG is still something where we can all learn a lot, I use it as a research tool Samuel: Yeah and I think considering the turbulent year that 2020 was, people were on their phones more so IG was definitely a place where people were looking for inspiration. Thibo Dennis: Thatā€™s the point! I was a Tumblr fan back in the day. I saved thousands and thousands of pictures, so I decided that I was gonna share some via IG stories You get a reaction from people when you share something that is different and you can start a conversation from that Samuel: Not being able to travel, where have you been looking for inspiration outside of IG? Thibo Dennis: I love books and magazines. Iā€™ve been collecting them since I was 14 (Book or Geek emoji) Thibo Dennis: Not just about fashion and sneakers. I would say theyā€™re more about painting, furniture and photography. Thibo Dennis: I can go back to the same book so many times and see something new each time. Samuel: Boon magazine is great. Japanese mags go so deep into sneaker and fashion culture. Even though you canā€™t read it you still understand what theyā€™re trying to communicate with their images and details Samuel: Japan is somewhere you like to travel for inspiration too right? Thibo Dennis: Itā€™s the reason my love for Japanese magazines began. They document everything. I was so happy to find, like, ā€œstill lifeā€ pics of items I couldnā€™t find or afford Thibo Dennis: They have a unique obsession with details, which is something I can relate to. Itā€™s all about passion Samuel: Letā€™s talk about your sneaker obsession. Anyone who follows your IG will know how much of a sneaker head you are. What originally got you into collecting? Thibo Dennis: It was from a really young age. It was just something I got into thanks to Nike and all the American culture around it. Thibo Dennis: Fun fact: I never went to the US before I was 25, but hip-hop had a big impact on French street culture so we were all looking at what was going on there Thibo Dennis: But then French music and street culture developed its own image very quickly Thibo Dennis: In the suburbs it was all about the Air Max. I wasnā€™t wearing Air Force 1s until I was 18 Samuel: Which Air Max was most popular in Paris when you were growing up? Thibo Dennis: I would say the Air Max 1 or Air Max 90. And then in early 2000, the TN was so big. I was more into the early designs. Iā€™ve got a particular admiration for the 95. I think it was a game changer. Samuel: The 95 is such an iconic shoe and a model that was also very popular in London sneaker scene too Thibo Dennis: Yes, I see it more as a London pair than Paris pair Samuel: Iā€™ve always personally liked the Air Max 180. That was the first pair I got. I loved the retro colours with the pink and blue Thibo Dennis: Itā€™s interesting because the Air bubble was constructed in a different way and the colours were less ā€œAir Max vibesā€. I think the 180 almost has a LA kind of vibe Thibo Dennis: I used to keep everything and Iā€™m now more specific and I like to give a lot away I keep the ones I like to look at from time to time Like nice selection of Jordans, Dunks, some of my Air Max 95, Iā€™ve a nice NB selection ... and I also keep some nice sandals with me Samuel: Are you someone who keeps sneakers deadstock in boxes or do you like to wear yours? Thibo Dennis: I wear everything. I like to wear sneakers. I appreciate putting on a pair I like even to go grocery shopping And when Iā€™m obsessed with a pair I try to keep one clean, but I would say that happens less than 5 times Samuel: ? I feel that Samuel: Those dunk low plaid from 03 are crazy Samuel: Feel like Travis Scott may have referenced those with his Cactus Jack versions Thibo Dennis: I actually found them by chance during lockdown Thibo Denis: So many nice references in Travis SB Thibo Dennis: Itā€™s a beautiful pair. Samuel: 2020 was a crazy year for sneaker drops. What were some of your favourite releases last year? Thibo Dennis: NB Studio FY7 Spiridon cage Stussy Fossil AF1 Stussy Fossil Travis SB NB Wtaps NB by Salehe Thibo Dennis: Some are people that I know and I appreciate their vision a lot. Itā€™s all about transmitting a message and I find that these pairs have meaning Thibo Dennis: What was your favourite sneaker of 2020? Samuel: My personal favourite was the Off-White Jordan 5. I also managed to secure the Jordan 4 Sail at the end of the year Add photo: https://stockx.com/air-jordan-5-retro-off-white-sail Thibo Dennis: Iā€™m kind of interested in the ISPA silhouettes and ideas. itā€™s interesting to see Nike developing these kinds of products Add photo: https://stockx.com/nike-ispa-road-warrior-sail Samuel: As a footwear designer what defines good sneaker design for you? Thibo Dennis: Volume and shape Tooling is also very important I always look at a pair in my hands 1st and after on feet. I love attention to detail as well. That's why I like New Balance, the fabrics and construction are always nice. Samuel: I noticed that youā€™re a big New Balance fan. What is it about their design philosophy that you like the most? ***INSERT THIBOā€™S NB COLLECTION HERE Thibo Dennis: I find everything is very consistent. From design to distribution to collabs to fabrics I appreciate they are still making pairs in the US. From an outsiderā€™s point of view, itā€™s super interesting to see how they work. Samuel: I think it was really interesting that they teamed up with shoe designer Sahele for one of their collabs last year. Brand collabs are a given now but it seems the actual sneaker designers behind the scenes are getting recognition now too. Thibo Dennis: I love seeing Salehe or Studio FY7 being able to share their own vision with a brand like NB Add photo: https://stockx.com/new-balance-2002r-salehe-bembury Thibo Dennis: If you showed me Saleheā€™s NB, I would tell you straight away ā€œthatā€™s very Saleheā€ Thibo Dennis: They did an amazing job. Also the NB 327 is a very interesting silhouette, combining heritage with modernity Add photo: https://stockx.com/new-balance-327-casablanca-green Samuel: Definitely, that was a really interesting model to pull out of the archive Samuel: Youā€™re also big into Birkenstocks too. 2020 was definitely all about functional footwear! Thibo Dennis: Itā€™s a big love.. I love the look mules and sandals give you when you wear them. Beside the functional aspect, I find them beautiful as a design. The idea of not having stitching and the raw edge thick suede leather Samuel: A lot of people are always asking about your customised Bostonā€™s with the stone embellishments. Whatā€™s the story behind those? Thibo Dennis: Well, itā€™s a custom pair. I saw a pic in a Japanese magazine called ā€œHugeā€ and did all kinds of research to find a pair.I managed to find a DS pair from a Japanese store that agreed to send them to me Thibo Dennis: I like them so much and itā€™s the only Birk pair I take care of ? Samuel: Theyā€™re such a great piece Thibo Dennis: I like that mix of influences Thibo Dennis: That kind of Native American vibe on a German design, youā€™d only find that in Japan Samuel: I canā€™t wait to travel to Japan again. So many great stores over there. Samuel: So letā€™s talk about your work as a footwear designer. What originally inspired you to get into that field of work? I didnā€™t grow up thinking I was going to be a designer, I think I didnā€™t even know what it was until a late teeenage age. I was lucky to meet people that show me how you can express ideas and make products. Samuel: Do you have any advice for young creatives looking to get into footwear design? Thibo Dennis: To be curious and look at everything that is not footwear. Samuel: What are you most excited for in 2021? Thibo Dennis: To be able to share a nice dinner at the restaurant with my friends ? Samuel: I definitely second that Samuel: Hopefully weā€™ll be able to share more persona time with our close friends and family this year Thibo Dennis: And design wise ... Iā€™m so curious to see the Jordan 1 Natural Grey Thibo Dennis: Thatā€™s so important for all of us
