This week we look back at one of the more underrated Asics GEL-Lyte III collabs, the Woei x Asics GEL-Lyte III.Woei is a shop based in Rotterdam that’s now been in business for nearly 10 years, which is quite an accomplishment in the competitive world of sneakers where good stores fold on a regular basis.
In 2012, Woei teamed up with Asics to rework the classic split-tongue runner. Breaking from traditional running shoe elements, Woei opted for a sand-colored upper, that gave the design a premium feel. Exaggerated stitching around the toebox on the Woei design was a first for the GEL-Lyte III, as was the addition of gold boot lace hooks. FInal touches came in the form of 3M hits.
One of the most unique things about the Woei x Asics GEL-Lyte III was the way it was released. Woei celebrated the release with a limited edition pack that included special packaging and a t-shirt available at their special outdoor release party/pop-up shop. A week later, on June 30th, 2012, the Woei Asics released in Europe. Then finally, on July 7th, the rest of the world was given the chance to grab a pair of these unique Asics.
