The Nike Air Max 1 was a completely unique concept when it debuted in 1987. Inspired by the Centre Pompidou, architect Tinker Hatfield added a window so consumers could see how Nike's air-filled technology works. This was controversial, with many on Nike's team opposing the development of the shoe. From a modern perspective, the early Air Max 1 windows do look primitive. Over time, the design of the Air Max became more refined. In fact, no throwback Air Max 1s were developed until the 1990s, and no collaborations were announced until 2002. Since then, the Air Max 1 has been the canvas for bold experiments with colour and texture. The Air Max 1 Patta Waves adds a twist through a new wave pattern and mini Swoosh. The The Air Max 1 Tokyo Maze features unique geometric art on the upper. The Chinese New Year mixes patterns, bold solids and is buffed to a high shine. The Air Max 1 Chinatown New York catches the eye with its contrast stitching and multi-coloured sole. The Have a Nike Day is a more subdued palette, and it has a softer suede texture.
