Supreme is a New York brand through and through. Founded in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood, the spirit of the city runs deep through the heart of the streetwear line. The city’s name finds itself placed proudly at the end of the label’s official full name; Supreme New York. It would only make sense that at some point Supreme would come to work with the city’s most influential sports team, the New York Yankees. As New York’s, and arguably the MLB’s winningest team, the Yankees are more than just a city-wide name, they’re a national institution in the baseball world. The Supreme x New York Yankees collaboration of SS15 was, at the time, the pinnacle collision of two of the city’s most esteemed brands in history.
The Supreme Yankees collaboration would have been a huge deal without the release of a collaborative Box Logo T-shirt but its inclusion meant the collection would become immortalized as a part of the brand’s most iconic catalog. The Yankees Box Logo T-shirts dropped in two different colorways, each of which feature a blue Supreme logo on the chest and Yankees NY logo on the back. The white and blue Supreme t-shirts dropped alongside a full collection with the MLB’s most winning team, featuring co-branded leather stadium jackets, hoodies, jerseys, hats and more. The collaboration dropped in two parts with the first release taking place early on in Supreme’s SS15 season and the second drop, which included the Box Logo T-shirts, taking place closer to the end of the season. Six years later, the New York Yankees Box Logo T-shirts trade on StockX for an average price of $566 USD, that’s nearly 13x the $44 USD retail price.
The Supreme New York Yankees Box Logo T-shirt is probably the most “New York” streetwear piece to ever exist. But if you look through the StockX catalog, there are a number of other “New York” Supreme items that hold their own. The most obvious contender is the Supreme x Timberland Boot, which has been delivered in multiple shapes and sizes as a result of more than ten collaborations over the last 26 years. The best and most fitting opponent to drop into the ring with the Supreme New York Yankees Box Logo T-shirt is the Stars and Stripes 6-Inch Boot, a grail in most Supreme fan circles. While this boot certainly carries its own weight, it’s hard to make the case that this collaboration is stronger than the World Famous collaborating with the World Champions. Beyond Supreme x Timberland, a number of other pieces like the Christopher Walken signed King Of New York T-shirt or the city skyline-touting New York Sweater demonstrate the brand’s love for its city. Though not all available on StockX, Supreme’s collaborations with notable New York artists like Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Futura cannot be forgotten. None of these though, can truly stand next and demand respect or recognition in the presence of a Supreme New York Yankees Box Logo that carries such a spirit of collaborative excellence. Fellow New York streetwear brand, Kith, has also released a number of collaborative Yankees pieces but that partnership pales in comparison next to a Supreme Box Logo. The Supreme New York Yankees Box Logo T-shirt is truly the streetwear version of the handshake emoji, in all of its navy blue glory.
