Yeezy Boost Resell Madness Before the Next Drop

With news that more Yeezys may be coming tomorrow and at various other times over the next month, now seemed like a good time to review the resell results to date.

Campless has always been known for three things:  sneakerhead data, sneakerheaddata and #sneakerheaddata.   Of the many things not listed, data visualization is perhaps the one that we regret the most.  With all the great data we have, analyses we perform and insights we extract, the true power of our work continues to be limited by the latest updates to WordPress and MS Office.  And let’s be clear here:  we’re pretty damn good with Powerpoint.  But I could be sucked into my computer screen and control the entire Powerpoint universe from inside the program like Flynn from Tron, and we’d still never have charts like The Evolution of Western Dance Music (do yourself a favor and click that).

So when we were asked to work with High Snobiety and learned that they’d be putting some proper designers to the task, we were very excited.  Yesterday they posted the result of that work, which can be seen HERE.  And now that the world has seen a different take on the presentation of our data, we thought it would be funny to show how our charts compare (or don’t) with the excellent work accomplished by the High Snobiety team, side by side for the exact same set of data.

First up, where are Yeezys selling:

Next, launch weekend resell recap:

A discerning eye may have caught the fact that these two charts actually have different numbers.  That’s because we have since updated the weekend launch statistics based on new data released by eBay.

Third, Yeezy Boost impact on eBay activity for Nike Yeezys:

Regardless of the different ways to present this, this is actually a fascinating chart.  The Yeezy Boost had a significant impact on the secondary market for Nike Yeezys, but in two, opposite ways.  On one hand, there was a big increase in LISTINGS of Nike Yeezys.  This would imply that many people think this is the best time to sell.  On the other hand, there was a big increase in SALES, implying others thing this is the right time to buy.  Interesting market dynamics at work here.  Kinda feel like I’m inching towards a Nobel Prize for Economics, but don’t want to jinx it by saying out loud.  (Seriously though, Nobel committee, check this shit out, dogs.  Our analysis of how Nike leverages the secondary market for its benefit is straight fiya.)

Finally, a timeline of key Yeezy Boost events leading up to launch weekend:

Taken as a whole, its important to remember that there are pros and cons to any chart and, to the extent you want to go deep on this topic, just Google “chartsmanship”.  But I’d like to point out what I think are the most salient differences between our charts:

1.  Their charts are prettier.

2.  Our charts are easier to read.

Another way to put it might be that their charts were made by Justin Long, and our charts were made by John Hodgman.

But that’s really it.

As sneaker designers get better at data visualization, and data visualization experts work with more sneaker data, those two qualities will merge, and Flynn will finally get out of Tron.

THAT ENDS THE COMPARISON PORTION OF THIS EXHBIT.  Please move forward through the double doors to return to your regularly curated experience.

You thought that’s all the data you were getting?  Aw.  Silly you.  Of course we have more data.

Here’s a few other cuts we decided to look at:  sales by day and eBay sellers:

Campless Yeezy Boost Daily Sales 022015

Key Insights:

  • No surprise that the bulk of sales occurred Friday through Saturday of launch weekend.
  • And no surprise that prices have started to come down a little, as this is typical market movement we’ve analyzed with other shoes.
  • But it is worthwhile to note that the first picture of a fake pair of Yeezys surfaced on Monday, and the next day it had it’s biggest drop in six days.
  • It’s also note worthy that 3 people paid an average of $2,742 for a pair of shoes that everyone in the world will be able to buy for $350 tomorrow.

Campless Yeezy Boost Seller Analysis 022015

Key Insights:

  • 11 dudes got the hookup!
  • In addition to these 11, who all sold at least 3 pairs of Yeezys, 63 sellers sold 2 pairs and 300 sold 1 pair.
  • How does one guy get 7 Yeezys to sell?  Jon Wexler, I’m looking at you.
  • BREAKING NEWS:  shantelsupergirl10 is actually Kylie Jenner (is that the younger one?) who stole the pairs Kim was wrapping for Jay-Z and Big Sean, etc.!!!  Stay tuned to the next episode of KUWTK to see how it all went down!  Will Scott continue his douche-baggery ways and rat her out?  Will Kylie give Khloe a pair at cost to make peace with Amber Rose?  Holy crap how do I know all of these things?!?!

So what did we learn today?

We learned that Campless is always looking for team members and could use a true data viz professional.  Seriously, email [email protected]

We learned that Yeezy Boost resell profile looks pretty much like every other big release.

And we learned that my wife watches the Kardashian show. Uh huh.  My wife.  Not me.

What do you think?
