The Fanny Pack is Back

For better or worse, the fanny pack (or bumbag if you’re feeling British) is a dated trend now being resurrected again, so tough luck if you want it taken off life support.  While it seems fleeting,  the fanny pack has actually been around for a long time, like over 5,000 years long.

When the 5,300-year-old mummified body of Ötzi the Iceman was discovered in 1991, a pouch sewn to his belt was also found, containing a scraper, dried fungus and a bunch of other ancient things only an iceman would need. You might say Ötzi is the oldest fanny pack fashion icon in existence. The use of pouches were also common in indigenous Native American communities who used them to store medicine.

But the fanny pack didn’t get mainstream acceptance until an Australian woman named Melba Stone came on the scene in 1962. Inspired by a kangaroo, she is credited for inventing the modern day fanny pack. Two decades later, they were the must have accessory of the time, along with acid washed jeans, terrible hair and leg warmers.

By the 90s, the fanny pack had died out. Though it only had a couple guest appearances in the 2000s thanks to the styling genius of Patricia Fields on Sex & The City, it is back with a vengeance and more glam than Melba Stone could ever dream of. Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Gucci all have fanny packs and celebs from Kim Kardashian to Leonardo DiCaprio love them. Even Hermes, the epitome of luxury and class is in on the game – the French fashion house revealed leather fanny packs for its fall/winter 2017 menswear collection.
