For better or worse, the fanny pack (or bumbag if you’re feeling British) is a dated trend now being resurrected again, so tough luck if you want it taken off life support. While it seems fleeting, the fanny pack has actually been around for a long time, like over 5,000 years long.
When the 5,300-year-old mummified body of Ötzi the Iceman was discovered in 1991, a pouch sewn to his belt was also found, containing a scraper, dried fungus and a bunch of other ancient things only an iceman would need. You might say Ötzi is the oldest fanny pack fashion icon in existence. The use of pouches were also common in indigenous Native American communities who used them to store medicine.
