Supreme x WTAPS

2009 was a big year for Supreme. It marked the brand’s 15th anniversary from their humble beginnings on Lafayette St in SoHo, to growth very few though was imaginable for such a niche skate brand. Little did many people know, things were just getting started in 2009, as the 10 years since then have frankly been a rise no one thought imaginable.

In June of 2009, Supreme collaborated with legendary Japanese brand Neighborhood (which was also founded in 1994) for a 15th anniversary t-shirt that featured a bat on the front, and the two brand’s logos on the reverse.

Just six months later, Supreme would work with WTAPS (pronounced double-taps) for a collection that would see a release in December of 2009. The baseball themed capsule, unofficially named the “21203 Collection”, is perhaps one of the best examples of a true collaboration – as both brands implemented their design aesthetics into several pieces including t-shirts, jackets, and pillows. While Supreme would go on to release many more pillows, cushions, and plushes, this collaboration in 2009 was their first. Check out photos of the full collection below.

Supreme x Louis Vuitton

While Supreme’s 2009 collaboration with WTAPS in 2009 could mark the “beginning” of the brands ascendence to global recognition, their 2017 collaboration with Kim Jones-led Louis Vuitton may have officially marked the “end” of Supreme’s niche community, vaulting the brand into a full-blown household name. The collection’s release in the summer of 2017 was shortly thereafter followed by a $500 Million investment by The Carlyle Group, resulting in the brand receiving a $1 Billion valuation. The highly sought-after collection released to mass hysteria at pop-up shops and select Louis Vuitton locations globally, and included over 40 unique items ranging from apparel and accessories to leather goods.
